GoSciTech summer camps bring hands-on STEM learning to students across 14 locations

Florence, South Carolina – Aiming to increase the reach of STEM education within South Carolina, the Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) has announced a notable increase of its summer day camps. Through collaborations with nearby technical colleges, this project will open four new sites, so expanding the overall number of hosting sites to 14. This growth emphasizes GSSM’s dedication to provide students—especially those from underprivileged and rural areas—access to STEM education.

Designed for rising 6th to 8th students, GSSM’s GoSciTech Day camps provide a four-day curriculum packed with interesting and hands-on scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical experiences. From Monday to Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., these camps not only concentrate on basic STEM skills but also on developing problem-solving and collaborative ability through events focusing on engineering, human biology, coding, and more.

Aiken Technical College in Graniteville, Piedmont Technical College in Greenwood, Trident Technical College in North Charleston, and Williamsburg Technical College in Kingstree will host the recently added camps. These additions will enable the camps to be easily reachable for students throughout the state, therefore bringing the rich universe of STEM closer to them.

“The GoSciTech Day camps offer students a hands-on introduction to STEM that can spark a lifelong passion for learning,” said Susan Engelhardt, outreach director of summer programs.

“Through our partnerships with technical colleges, we’re able to bring these enriching experiences closer to home for students across South Carolina, especially in rural and underserved areas. It’s exciting to see students not only dive into STEM but also connect with like-minded peers who share their interests. For families seeking a summer program that challenges students to think creatively and solve real-world problems, GoSciTech is the perfect fit,” Engelhardt added.

Summer day camps in 2025 will be offered at the following technical colleges:

  • Aiken Technical College (Graniteville) – June 16-19
  • Central Carolina Technical College (Sumter) – June 23-26
  • Denmark Technical College (Denmark) – June 23-26
  • Florence-Darlington Technical College (Florence) – June 16-19
  • Greenville Technical College (Greenville) – June 16-19
  • Horry-Georgetown Technical College (Conway) – June 23-26
  • Midlands Technical College (Columbia) – July 7-10
