South Carolina’s fight against cancer strengthens with new MUSC treatment and research facility in Florence

Florence County, South Carolina – MUSC Health Florence Medical Center has announced the start of construction of a new facility inside the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center network in an ambitious effort to fight cancer in South Carolina.

Particularly improving services for the most common cancers, breast, lung, and prostate, the forthcoming MUSC Hollings Cancer Network – Florence facility is anticipated to increase the range and accessibility of cancer treatment in the Pee Dee area.

Very important move

With this center bringing together innovative clinical trials and complete cancer treatments under one roof, this move seems to be a significant advancement for healthcare in the region. With an average of 780 cancer diagnosis annually, Florence County will now have easier access to gynecological oncology, radiation oncology, and specialized medical and surgical oncology treatments.

The new clinic will also provide very specific surgical treatments for breast, urological, and thoracic problems. The MUSC Hollings Cancer Network – Florence is a part of a larger project aiming at decentralizing specialist cancer treatment so that it may be more easily available to people across South Carolina.

MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center in the state, is ideally positioned to provide the area access to modern therapies and technologies.

“The Hollings mission is to ease the burden of cancer for the state, and to do that, we need to make services more convenient in all regions of the state,” said Raymond N. DuBois, M.D., Ph.D. “This new facility will allow us to support the clinicians and patients in the Pee Dee region by providing them with easier access to a wider breadth of services.”

Additional services for local residents 

Apart from providing direct medical treatment, the new facility is expected to have a significant community impact by providing early cancer screenings and preventative programs, therefore targeting cancer before it gets more difficult to treat.

Chief Executive Officer of MUSC Health Florence/Marion/Black River Medical Centers Jay Hinesley focused on the larger promise of the institution.

“By partnering with healthcare organizations across our region, we are strengthening our community’s access to world-class cancer care,” said MUSC Health Florence/Marion/Black River Medical Centers Chief Executive Officer Jay Hinesley.

“Today, we celebrate not just a building, but a promise – to provide hope, healing and advanced treatment options right here in Pee Dee region.”
