Texas Democrat ready to collaborate with the GOP to beat ‘the most extreme Senator in the country’, a Republican

During Super Tuesday, California witnessed one of the most interesting Senate primary races that ended amidst much controversy. The state features a unique non-partisan Senate primary system where candidates from all parties compete together. The republican candidate Steve Garvey won the primary, with Democrat Adam Schiff, widely viewed as the frontrunner for the seat, finishing second. Schiff was later criticized by Democratic Representative Katie Porter, who placed third, for allegedly leveraging “dark money” contributions to sabotage her campaign, claiming the “election was rigged”.

The Presidential race

As we approach November and the general election, the political landscape is expected to become more and more intense each day with contentious episodes and controversies among candidates. Last weekend in Ohio, just days before the state’s primary, Trump held a rally that was deemed highly provocative, marking his most contentious public engagement since the primaries began. Amid discussions on the U.S. economy and the national automobile sector, Trump warned of a ‘bloodbath’ should he not secure the win in November, a term that many associated with the January 6 riots.

Texas primaries

Just like California, Texas is on the verge of an interesting Senate contest. Congressman Colin Allred, representing Texas’s 32nd district and winner of the state’s Democratic primary, is gearing up for a challenge against Senator Ted Cruz, who has been in office since 2013. Allred has expressed his determination to unseat the incumbent Senator Cruz in the upcoming election.

Colin Allred ready to work with Republicans

Speaking to Newsweek last week, Colin Allred shared his determination to defeat Ted Cruz, mentioning even unconventional steps. Allred looks forward in gathering support from both political parties to strengthen the country’s democracy. Allred emphasized his openness to collaborating with like-minded Republicans to defeat Cruz.

Broad coalition

“I am building a broad coalition of folks who know we deserve better than Ted Cruz; that includes Democrats and Independents who are ready for new leadership as well as Republicans who think, ‘I’m not that kind of Republican and I don’t want to be associated with that extremism,'” Allred said in an exclusive interview with Newsweek.

Allred criticized his opponent for his far-right views. “Together, we will send a message that Texans want someone who will work for them, and we will reject Ted Cruz who is the most extreme Senator in the country,” he said.

Cruz enjoys huge voters’ support

After Cruz secured the Republican nomination for his Senate seat, he posted on X, formerly Twitter: “I am proud to be the GOP’s decisive nominee for U.S. Senate. Never before has it been more important to unify and fight against the radical left who threaten to change what makes this state great.”

Long shot

But taking down Cruz is a huge challenge. During the 2018 election, then-Congressman Beto O’Rourke, Cruz’s Democratic challenger, received national buzz as the underdog in the race. He raised $70 million for his campaign, yet he didn’t manage to win against Cruz, missing out by just 2.6 percent of the votes. If Allred manages to defeat Cruz, it would be a significant victory for the Democrats, especially considering that a Democrat hasn’t secured a statewide office in Texas in 30 years.

Confidence

Colin is confident that he will win Cruz’s seat in November. He said to Newsweek: “I’m a fourth generation Texan…people from across this state have shaped my life and I know we are so much better than Ted Cruz makes us out to be. In November, Texas will reject Ted Cruz.”
