Columbia, South Carolina – Following devastating flooding last November that affected the Midlands, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster formally asked for a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration. With hundreds of homes severely damaged, this request seeks to provide federal assistance to the hardest-hit South Carolina counties—Orangeburg, Bamberg, and Calhoun.
After extensive FEMA evaluation together with state and local emergency personnel, it was discovered that the floods had destroyed around 100 residences, with overall damages estimated at almost $11 million. This outcome shows how significantly the hurricane affected these communities.
The request made by Governor McMaster is essential in turning on government resources to support recovery initiatives. If approved, the declaration will help to provide the FEMA Individual Assistance Program in Orangeburg and Bamberg counties. This initiative is meant to provide residents who suffered uninsured property damage from the storm cash assistance so they won’t be solely responsible for recovery expenses.
Apart from personal assistance, the request aims to incorporate other kinds of FEMA help for Calhoun County, therefore reflecting the whole demands of the regional recovery process. Along with the request, the Public Assistance Program would help state and local governments be reimbursed for the costs paid during the initial response and recovery activities. FEMA would pay 75% of these expenses under this arrangement; the remaining 25% would be handled subsequently.

The governor has also pushed for FEMA Hazard Mitigating Program funding inclusion. These subsidies are essential for carrying out long-term plans to lower the danger and influence of future storms, therefore strengthening the resilience of these areas against such events.
The affected areas depend on the effective acceptance of this disaster declaration to provide not only quick help but also strengthening of defenses against next disasters. The support detailed in Governor McMaster’s request emphasizes an essential action toward recovery and rebuilding as the impacted communities wait for a decision.
