S.C. lawmakers clash over shocking Minnesota ICE execution: “ICE has been wreaking havoc under Donald Trump’s direction”

South Carolina – After a deadly shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during an operation in Minnesota, leaders from South Carolina are speaking out. This incident has ignited national controversy and protests in the city where it happened.

The incident happened on Wednesday in Minnesota, where 37-year-old Renee Nicole Macklin Good was murdered during an immigration enforcement action. The Department of Homeland Security said the encounter happened as officers were doing what officials called an immigration crackdown.

A department spokesperson said that Good was shot after she allegedly tried to hit police officers with her car while trying to leave the area.

Federal officials have stood up for the agent’s activities. President Donald Trump claimed in public that the ICE agent acted in self-defense, referring to the assertion that police were under immediate danger.

Some Democratic politicians and immigrant rights groups, on the other hand, disagree with the federal government’s narrative. They say that the circumstances surrounding the shooting raise serious questions about the use of force during deportation operations.

After the event, South Carolina U.S. Representative Jim Clyburn made a strong statement. Clyburn wrote on social media that the shooting was unjust and condemned ICE’s methods during the Trump administration.

“This morning, a masked ICE agent shot and killed an unarmed woman in Minneapolis as she sought to leave. This was an unjustifiable act of violence,” Clyburn wrote on X.

“ICE has been wreaking havoc in our communities under Donald Trump’s direction, and today an American lost her life as a result. There must be accountability and justice, and the Trump Administration must cease these reckless ICE activities that are undermining public safety before more lives are lost.”

The leaders of the South Carolina Republicans had a very different answer. U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said that the woman could have avoided the scenario if she had cooperated with the police. Graham said that police officers have the right to protect themselves when they think their lives are in danger, especially when a car is involved.

“We watched the video several times with the President. I am told the officer who was struck by the vehicle is recovering in the hospital,” Graham wrote.

“This could have easily been prevented by complying with the officer’s command. If an officer lawfully asks you to exit a vehicle but you do not comply and then strike that officer with a vehicle, you may get shot.”

“The takeaway for me is simple. If you try to run over a law enforcement officer with your vehicle, it is at your own peril. Every law enforcement officer has the right to protect themselves when someone tries to run them over, not only for the benefit of the officer, but for anyone who could be in harm’s way.”

Nancy Mace, a U.S. Representative, talked mostly about the riots that happened after the incident. Mace asked for the National Guard to be sent to Minnesota, alleging that the city had become chaotic. She stated on social media that Democratic leaders are to fault for making people angry at the police. She also added that ICE agents and local police require additional protection as protests intensify.

The shooting continues to be investigated, and officials haven’t said anything else about the agent involved. As the investigation continues, rallies and demonstrations have begun across Minnesota, with protesters demanding transparency and accountability.

The event has made the national divide over immigration enforcement and the involvement of federal agents much worse. This is very clear in the statements from South Carolina’s congressional delegation.
