Businesses across South Carolina invited to compete for prestigious Small Business of the Year award

Florence, South Carolina – South Carolina’s small business community is once again stepping into the spotlight as nominations open for the SCMC Small Business of the Year Award, a recognition designed to highlight companies that are not only growing, but making a meaningful impact along the way.

The award celebrates businesses that stand out across several key areas, including sustained growth, strong customer relationships, leadership, and a clear commitment to both employees and the broader community. It reflects more than financial success, it captures the full picture of what it means to build and lead a thriving enterprise in today’s economy.

Nominations are open to a wide range of voices.

Business owners can put themselves forward, but recognition can also come from those who see their work up close, employees, peers, or members of the community. Every nominee is required to complete an online application detailing their achievements, offering a closer look at how their business operates and contributes beyond its bottom line.

Once submitted, applications go through a structured, multi-step evaluation.

An initial review by an SCMC selection committee ensures each entry meets eligibility requirements and includes all necessary information. From there, qualified submissions move to a panel of judges from the Small Business Council, who assess each candidate using established criteria. Scores are carefully weighted, allowing the strongest contenders to rise to the top.

For the highest-ranked applicants, the process does not end on paper. Finalists, typically between three and five, may be invited to participate in a site visit or virtual interview. This step allows judges to validate accomplishments and gain deeper insight before making their final decision.

Eligibility remains broad but clearly defined. Businesses must be headquartered in South Carolina, meet federal small business size standards, and have operated continuously for at least three years.

The award welcomes companies from all sectors, including retail, manufacturing, technology, service, and agriculture, provided they remain in good standing with all regulatory and legal requirements.

The winner will be announced during Small Business Day on April 30, 2026, an annual gathering that brings entrepreneurs and state leaders together to discuss issues shaping the future of small business.

Applications close on April 13, marking the final opportunity for deserving businesses to be considered for one of the state’s most distinguished honors.
