City selects veteran law enforcement leader Angela M. Greene to head Florence Police Department

Florence, South Carolina – A new chapter is set to begin for law enforcement in Florence as city officials have selected Angela M. Greene to lead the Florence Police Department, marking a significant moment for the community’s public safety leadership.

An investiture ceremony welcoming Greene into her new role was scheduled for Monday, March 23, 2026, at 3 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the City Center on West Evans Street. The event was open to the public, offering residents an opportunity to witness the formal introduction of the city’s next police chief.

Greene will officially assume her duties on April 1.

Her appointment follows a lengthy and deliberate search process, culminating in the selection of a candidate with more than two decades of law enforcement experience.

Greene began her career in 2001 with the Richmond Police Department, where she steadily advanced through the ranks to become a captain. Along the way, she gained experience across multiple divisions, including patrol operations and criminal investigations, while contributing to broader crime-reduction strategies.

In 2016, Greene moved into a leadership role with the Portsmouth Police Department as Assistant Chief, overseeing a wide range of operations from patrol units to specialized teams such as SWAT and K-9. Her responsibilities spanned nearly every operational corner of the department, reflecting both trust in her leadership and her ability to manage complex public safety efforts.

She later rose to Chief of Police in Portsmouth, guiding a large department that included sworn officers, auxiliary members, and civilian staff.

During that time, she focused on targeted approaches to reducing crime while strengthening ties between officers and the community. Her emphasis on collaboration continued during her tenure as Chief in Lexington, Virginia, where she prioritized transparency, accountability, and partnerships with local institutions.

Most recently, Greene served at the state level as Director of Organized Retail Crime for the Virginia Attorney General’s Office, coordinating efforts among law enforcement agencies and private partners to address retail theft networks.

Her academic background includes degrees in pre-law, political science, and public administration, and she is currently pursuing a doctorate. She has also completed executive-level training through the FBI’s National Command Course and was recognized in 2025 with a statewide leadership award.

City Manager Scotty Davis expressed confidence in the appointment, noting that Greene’s experience and leadership approach align with Florence’s commitment to public trust and strong community relationships.
