High school students invited to explore behind-the-scenes workings of Florence government

Florence, South Carolina – Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 session of Youth City University. This fun program is meant to teach high school kids about how local government works in Florence, South Carolina. This one-of-a-kind seven-week class lets kids discover how their city works up close and personal by letting them work with agencies like Police, Fire, Public Works, and Utilities.

The City of Florence runs Youth CityU, which is not just another classroom program. It’s an interactive, behind-the-scenes look at how the city works, including site visits, talks with city workers, and real-world activities that make local government come to life. Participants will learn a lot about the mechanisms that keep everyday life going, from how firefighters train to how water is handled and transported.

They will start on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in the City Council Chambers. Students will even go to a genuine City Council meeting and get a graduation certificate, which is great for college applications or potential career résumés.
