Controversial Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry: “We got to take the system that they (Democrats) have…”

More than three years have passed since the January 6 Capitol riot, an incident that will be remembered as one of the darkest episodes in the nation’s history. Trump and some of his closest allies still continue to spread the false claims of election fraud even though we are just months away from the November general election when the former president and presumptive Republican candidate is expected to once again face President Joe Biden.

Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry involvement

The controversial Pennsylvania Representative Scott Perry, known for his conservative stance and past former member of the House Freedom Caucus, has gained attention for his alleged role in supporting former President Trump’s efforts to contest the 2020 election results in Pennsylvania. Perry, who represents the 10th Congressional District as a Republican, faces no challengers within his party for the upcoming nomination. However, six Democrats are competing to be their party’s candidate against him.

Mail-in voting

“Mail-in voting is totally corrupt,” Trump said during a February rally in Michigan. Democrats have increasingly used this method, and it showed in the 2020 election results, where President Joe Biden secured the majority of mail-in votes in 14 of the 15 states analyzed by 538.com. On the other hand, Trump dominated the in-person Election Day voting in the same number of states, including Pennsylvania. Despite Trump’s strong objections to mail-in voting due to concerns about potential fraud, Perry is now encouraging his party Pennsylvania voters and to adopt this voting method.

Perry’s call to voters

Perry appeared at the annual Pennsylvania Leadership Conference last Friday and used the occasion to challenge his conservative colleagues to support mail-in voting. Perry explained that his call comes because of the current voting laws. “I didn’t pick the battlefield that I was going to have to fight on and neither did you,” Perry said. “It is what it is. We have what we have.”

Identifying voters a concern

Perry said he opposes the idea “Election Month or Election Week” and he favors a traditional Election Day with voter ID requirements. However, because the current voting rules favor mail-in voting and the legislature is unlikely to alter these regulations, Republicans should work within this framework if they want to win over Democrats in Pennsylvania.

“The way it’s going to happen is this,” Perry said. “We got to take the system that they have, the system that was put in place, and we’re going to beat them at their own game and when we beat them at their own game, they’ll be crying to show up on Election Day with their identification.”

Perry urged Republicans to “stay in the fight”. He urged everyone to register to vote and actually vote, regardless of the method. He further added that Republicans would consistently win elections if every registered Republican voted. The audience applauded after his speech.

David McCormick also supports the idea

Perry, a longstanding participant at the Pennsylvania Leadership Conference held in his district, was not alone in advocating for mail-in voting at the event. Alongside him, U.S. Senate Republican candidate David McCormick also emphasized the importance of embracing mail-in voting, warning that failure to do so could lead to losses.

A commitment to voting early

Outside the conference room, the Pennsylvania Republican Party had set up a sign-in sheet urging attendees to commit to early voting. Additionally, signs from the Win Again PAC declared, “Beat the Democrats Vote By MAIL,” promoting the strategy. Perry was the only member of the state’s congressional delegation to deliver an address to the conference on Friday.

Trump visiting the state again

Former President Trump is scheduled to visit Pennsylvania again on April 13, with planned events in the Philadelphia suburbs and the Lehigh Valley. Perry had previously attended Trump’s event in Harrisburg this February, which was hosted by the National Rifle Association.
