City of Columbia invites residents to help shape the city’s future by applying for open civic roles

Columbia, South Carolina – The City of Columbia has opened its doors to residents interested in shaping the future of our community by inviting applications for multiple boards and commissions. This is an opportunity for people to bring their knowledge, enthusiasm, and viewpoint to several civic projects given the fact that there are seats open across several different bodies. Those applying should be aware of the May 31, 2025 deadline and submit their applications using the city’s updated MatchBoard platform.

First up is the Board of Zoning Appeals (BOZA), which has one open seat. Operating as a quasi-judicial panel, BOZA examines and decides zoning conflicts under Chapter 17 of the City Code of Ordinances and Title 30, Chapter 4 of the South Carolina Code of Laws. Playing a key role in interpreting land-use rules, members serve staggered three-year terms.

Next, the Columbia Museum of Art Commission (CMA) has one vacancy. Commissioners manage the museum’s endowment, look after its collection, and guide exhibition planning. Applicants have to reside inside Columbia’s city borders to qualify. This post offers a longer vision for shaping the city’s cultural scene since it has a five-year term.

The Food Policy Committee (FPC) wants six more members to join its fifteen-person panel. Tasked with tackling issues spanning food production, distribution, waste management, and consumption, the FPC hopes to promote sustainability, economic vitality, and equality in our local food system. Members work together on studies, campaign legislative changes, and build alliances between companies, governments, and charities. Appointments run two years, allowing committees time to complete initiatives.

Likewise, the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council (GCCRC) seeks six members. This council examines problems influencing community cohesion and writes city-wide harmony promotion suggestions. Most meetings occur bi-monthly after 5 p.m., and every director is required to support fundraising efforts—either through personal contributions or collecting donations up to $1,500. Chosen individuals will serve for three years.

The Parks and Recreation Foundation wants three representatives—one each from Districts 1, 2, and 3. Working to increase recreational opportunities for all ages, foundation members support educational and developmental initiatives linked to the Parks and Recreation Department. These chairs have three-year mandates as well.

At last, two positions are being filled by the Planning Commission. Evaluating development proposals, working with state and federal programs, and advising on conservation objectives, commissioners assist shape and preserve the city’s long-range growth plan. Serving three years, they are custodians of Columbia’s physical development.
