As all eyes are on Trump’s hush-money trial in New York, things could soon take a sudden turn after a Florida Congressman is reportedly ‘polishing’ an impeachment initiative for President Joe Biden. Last week, Rep. Cory Mills formally introduced a resolution in the House to impeach Biden, which was explained by Rep. Mills as “his constitutional duty to present articles of impeachment against Joe Biden for his most recent abuse of power” and that his recent actions “not only compromised the credibility of the United States but also undermined the interests of our longstanding ally, Israel.”.
Long shot
Republicans have a paper-thin majority in the House of Representatives, but the group is also heavily divided. For almost a year, the tense atmosphere in the House was another proof that things don’t work as expected among GOP lawmakers. The two factions, moderate establishment Republicans and those with hardline conservative ideology, have created what many now call “Chaos in the House,” resulting in several retirements and resignations.
Just recently, Democrats even stood with their GOP colleagues to save House Speaker Mike Johnson from ousting after the staunch conservative Rep. M. T. Green filed a motion to remove Johnson from the position. Seeing Biden impeached with the current climate in the House and with less than six months until the November general election seems heavily unlikely. However, the Mills impeachment initiative is gaining momentum among other Republicans, who are confident that the initiative will move forward ‘very soon’.
Expressing support
Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) recently had an exclusive interview with The Floridian about the likelihood of impeachment charges being filed against President Joe Biden. This comes particularly after Biden’s decision not to send offensive weapons to Israel for use in Rafah. The congressman from Florida mentioned that another lawmaker from the same state is likely to introduce these impeachment articles soon. He noted that these documents are being finalized before their submission to the House of Representatives.
“I think [Representative Cory Mills’] impeachment articles are going to move forward. I think what he’s working on right now is the language in the articles where a lot of members can be comfortable voting for it, but I agree with him,” said Rep Donalds.
“I think you’re in an election season. People are triple-checking boxes. Sometimes I think people up here on Capitol Hill are way overthinking things. This is pretty simple. Joe Biden – I think Cory [Mills] calls it a ‘Quid Pro Joe,’ so that’s what he calls it. But it’s true. The reason why he’s doing this is because he’s losing votes in Michigan,” said Rep. Donalds.
The interview was published on May 17. Watch the interview on Youtube. More details here.
The issue
Earlier this month, President Joe Biden announced that he would not provide offensive weapons that Israel might use to launch a major attack on Rafah, Gaza’s last significant Hamas stronghold, because he was worried about the safety of over a million civilians taking refuge there. In a CNN interview, Biden mentioned that while the U.S. remains committed to defending Israel by providing Iron Dome rocket interceptors and other defensive equipment but “we’re not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used” if Israel goes into Rafah.
Florida Senator Rick Scott also attacked Biden recently
Senator Rick Scott from Florida criticized President Biden, accusing him of trying to please the pro-Hamas elements within the Democratic Party. He argued that Biden’s approach to handling the situation in Gaza was indicative of his generally unsuccessful record.
“I’ve always believed that Biden is unfortunately now part of the pro-Hamas wing of his party that’s all they’re worried about is, he’s worried about winning the presidential election,” Scott said on Fox News Sunday. “Thank God for President Trump. He’s one of the most pro-Israel presidents in our in our history, and I hope he wins so we can get somebody in there that’s going to support Israel.”
