Turmoil in the GOP: Georgia Rep. Greene rips Speaker Mike Johnson for backing Trump

Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is once again in the media spotlight after heavily criticizing House Speaker Mike Johnson for his public appearance earlier this week, where he defended Trump in the New York trial. On Tuesday, House Speaker Johnson went to New York to show open support for the former president, joining several other prominent Republican politicians who had already done the same in the past few days. Greene’s comments sparked a lot of online debate on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, where users slammed the lawmaker for damaging the Republican Party’s public image with her behavior.

The details

At a press conference on Tuesday, Johnson once again repeated what the group of lawmakers who visited New York in recent days are constantly repeating. Simply put, Johnson used the Trump narrative to attack Biden, the case, and everyone involved in the legal process. Senator J.D. Vance from Ohio, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senator Tommy Tuberville, onetime Trump opponent Vivek Ramaswamy, and other prominent figures have visited New York and spoken on Trump’s behalf since the beginning of the week.

GOP in chaos

For months now, the public has been witnessing total chaos in the House of Representatives. The unsettling atmosphere continues even after Speaker Johnson was voted on for the position late last year. Two of the most controversial lawmakers blamed for the current situation are Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz and Rep. Greene. Greene recently filed a motion to oust Johnson, an effort that spectacularly failed due to a bipartisan effort to save the Speaker and avoid even more turmoil.

Johnson appearance backfire

In a press conference, Johnson criticized the US legal system heavily, calling the hush money trial against Donald Trump, who is likely to be the Republican candidate for president in 2024, a baseless “sham.” Johnson’s decision to support Trump publicly was met with disapproval from several members of his own party, such as former Representative Liz Cheney and Georgia’s Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

“Have to admit I’m surprised that @SpeakerJohnson wants to be in the ‘I cheated on my wife with a porn star’ club. I guess he’s not that concerned with teaching morality to our young people after all,” she tweeted.

Greene slams Johnson

At the same time, Marjorie Taylor Greene, who often disagrees with Johnson, used her platform to voice her objections about the trial in New York. She argued that the Speaker of the House should be focusing on removing Jack Smith, the special counsel appointed by the Department of Justice. Smith has been leading the investigation into accusations of Trump’s interference in the 2020 election. In August, Trump was formally accused of trying to overturn his election loss to Joe Biden in four charges related to that investigation. Nonetheless, Johnson was present at Trump’s separate hush money trial in Manhattan

“The Speaker of the House should be defunding Jack Smith instead of watching Pres Trump be persecuted by a NY corrupt DA in a politically weaponized judge’s courtroom. Pathetic,” she wrote.

About the case

The atmosphere at the New York trial has gotten more intense this week with Mike Cohen, Trump’s former fixer and attorney, who is labeled as the “star victim,” taking the stand on Monday for the first time since the start of the trial. The New York hush-money trial is anticipated to last six weeks, with Trump being ordered to appear at every court hearing amid the presidential campaign. Republican lawmakers blame Judge Juan Merchan for getting Trump off the campaign trail.

Trump, who has become the first ex-president in US history to face a criminal trial, was indicted in March 2023 on allegations of falsifying company documents.
