SPC Credit Union launches extended training series for first-time homebuyers

Hartsville, South Carolina – SPC Credit Union is starting a new training program to help people who are buying their first home feel more confident about the measures they need to follow. The eight-month training series will start in February and end in September 2026. It will teach participants about the most important financial and lending topics involved in buying a first home.

The program is for those who are new to buying a home and want clear, useful information before making a big financial decision. Members of SPC Credit Union’s local lending staff will teach the classes, bringing their own experience and understanding of the local market to each session.

The Butler Heritage Foundation Auditorium at 1103 South Sixth Street in Hartsville will host the workshops every second Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

In eight sessions, people will learn about a lot of different things that are important for being ready to buy a home. You will learn the foundations of budgeting, how to read credit scores, and how different forms of loans function.

People who come will also learn the difference between the sales price and the loan amount, what mortgage insurance and monthly payments represent, and the difference between prequalification and preapproval. The purpose is to enable people who want to buy a house in the future better understand their financial situation and what they need to do before they start looking for a home.

There are only 20 spots in each class so that everyone can get targeted training and connect with each other. Early registration is encouraged because there aren’t many spots available.

Anyone can come to the workshop, and you don’t have to be a member of SPC Credit Union to participate. You have to pay $25 to register, and the money goes to the SPC Cares Foundation’s Down Payment Assistance Fund, which helps more people in the community buy homes.

SPC Credit Union is making the program look like more than just a one-time seminar by giving this long series of workshops. Instead, it offers continual instruction over the course of several months, giving participants time to learn, ask questions, and gain confidence as they get ready to buy their first home.
