Florence reminds businesses to renew licenses by April 30 to avoid rising penalties

Florence, South Carolina – Business owners and professionals operating within the corporate limits of Florence are being reminded that the deadline to renew their business licenses for the upcoming license year is approaching.

According to city officials, all renewals must be completed and submitted by April 30, 2026, in order to remain in compliance with local licensing requirements.

The renewal applies to every individual or entity conducting business, maintaining an office, or engaging in any profession within the City of Florence.

Under the city’s regulations, businesses are required to obtain and maintain a valid license by paying the appropriate business license tax, which is calculated based on the nature of the business and its reported gross revenue.

Florence determines business classifications using the North American Industry Classification System, commonly known as NAICS. Each business is assigned a classification code reflecting the type of work it performs. That classification helps determine the applicable rate used to calculate the license tax owed.

City officials warn that failing to submit payment by the April 30 deadline can lead to significant penalties. A late fee of 10 percent of the unpaid tax will be applied beginning May 1, with the penalty increasing each month the payment remains outstanding.

The late charge rises to 20 percent in June, 30 percent in July, and continues increasing until reaching 60 percent by October, where it remains for the remainder of the year.

The Local Business License Renewal Center has been established to assist companies that need to renew an existing license for the 2026–2027 license period.

Businesses seeking to renew a license for the current 2025–2026 year, however, must contact the city directly. Those looking to start a new business must follow the city’s standard application process to obtain their initial license.

City officials encourage businesses to review the Florence Business License Ordinance for additional details about licensing requirements and procedures.
