Sheriff’s Office recognizes unsung heroes serving inside Florence County Detention Center

Florence, South Carolina – Florence County is taking time this week to recognize a group of public servants whose work often happens far from the spotlight, but whose role remains essential to the safety and stability of the community.

As Correctional Officers & Employees Week is observed, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office is honoring the men and women of the Florence County Detention Center for their professionalism, sacrifice, and steady commitment to public safety.

Their work is not always visible to the public.

Much of it takes place behind secure doors, during long shifts, under pressure, and with responsibilities that require patience, discipline, awareness, and courage.

Yet every day, detention center officers and employees help maintain order, protect lives, and support the larger criminal justice system in Florence County.

The Sheriff’s Office described their service as work done “behind the scenes,” but with an impact that reaches far beyond the walls of the detention center. These officers and staff members are responsible for ensuring security, responding to difficult situations, and carrying out their duties with integrity while serving both the facility and the wider community.

During the week of recognition, officials are encouraging residents to pause and appreciate the people who perform this demanding job day after day. Their duties may not always draw public attention, but they remain a vital part of protecting the citizens of Florence County.

President Ronald Reagan once said:

“Correctional officers are the unsung heroes of the criminal justice system.”

That message sits at the heart of this week’s tribute. For the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, Correctional Officers & Employees Week is not only a formal observance, but also a chance to remind the public that these employees carry a quiet but important responsibility every single day.

The Sheriff’s Office also encouraged anyone who sees a Florence County Detention Center officer this week to stop and offer a simple thank you. That small gesture, officials noted, can mean a great deal to those whose work is often unseen but deeply important.

This week, Florence County honors those heroes for their service, dedication, and the vital role they play in protecting the community. Their commitment helps keep the detention center secure, supports public safety, and strengthens the trust placed in those who serve.
