Kelley Center workshop in Florence breaks down accounting basics for growing small businesses at a May event

Florence, South Carolina – Small business owners who want a clearer handle on their numbers will soon have a chance to sharpen those skills in Florence.

The Kelley Center for Economic Development is set to host a free, in-person workshop designed to help entrepreneurs better understand the financial side of running a business.

The session, titled Basic Accounting for Small Businesses, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, at the University Place Building, located at 142 North Dargan Street in Florence.

Organizers are offering two separate time slots for attendees, giving participants the option to attend from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. or later in the day from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

The workshop is aimed at business owners who may still be sorting through the language and structure of everyday financial management.

For many, terms like revenue, income, profit, P&L, and COGS can feel confusing at first. The event is intended to break those ideas down into practical, understandable pieces and help business owners become more confident in managing their financial records.

According to the event description, the workshop will cover several key areas that are essential for small business operations.

Topics include accounting terms, common financial reports, how to create a budget, and accounting tools. The goal is to give attendees a stronger foundation in the basics, whether they are launching a new venture or trying to improve how they track the health of an existing business.

The Kelley Center also frames the workshop around questions many owners have likely asked themselves at some point: “Are you unsure what the difference is between revenue, income, and profit? Do you know your business break-even? Have you ever had to look up what P&L or COGS means?”

For those who answer yes, the session is being presented as a timely and practical learning opportunity.

Because space is limited, registration is required in advance. Those interested in attending can learn more and sign up through the Kelley Center’s event information page at https://www.fmarion.edu/kelleycenter/ or by checking the workshop listing if available through the center’s official channels.

With limited seating and a focus on practical business knowledge, the workshop offers a straightforward opportunity for local entrepreneurs to step back, strengthen their understanding of core accounting concepts, and bring a little more clarity to the numbers that shape their business decisions.
