Francis Marion University opens Freshwater Ecology Complex for the public

Florence, South Carolina – Francis Marion University recently made a generous move towards community engagement by letting everyone use the new trails and fishing lake at the Freshwater Ecology Complex. Open to the public for the first time last Friday, community members can now discover and enjoy the natural beauty of the complex every weekend, from sunrise to sunset (except on holidays).

The Overlook Trail, the Forest Trail, and the Fishing Trail are the three trails that people can use to discover the Freshwater Ecology Complex. Several community members already enjoyed the peaceful setting during the opening weekend by either walking along the paths or fishing.

You can take your time walking along the Overlook Trail, which goes through a mixed-hardwood forest and ends at a viewing deck with a view of the beautiful Backswamp. The.41-mile Forest Loop Trail winds through the trees and ends at the main gate. It’s an easy way to get away to nature. Along with these walking paths, the complex has set aside a public access fishing area that can be used on the same days. Anyone with a current SC freshwater fishing license and a completed FMU fishing registration can take advantage of the fishing opportunities.

Anna Todd, a staff member at FMU, said that the university has long wanted to share this ecological gem with the public. For biology students during the week, the complex is an important resource that they use for both study and learning. By letting anyone visit on the weekends, more people can enjoy the area’s beauty and peace, while also helping the university do its job of teaching.

People who want to fish in the lake must have necessary licensing and fill out a registration and creel survey card, which can be found online or at the kiosk at the trailhead. This measure not only regulates fishing, but it also helps students learn about fisheries management because the collected data from the creel surveys are used for stock assessments.

To keep people safe and protect the environment, the university has put in place specific guidelines for how the complex can be used. These include prohibitions on pets (except service animals), hunting, swimming, or boating. The public is also reminded that the complex is only available for research and educational reasons from Monday to Thursday. This shows how important this resource is to the university’s academic programs.

The Freshwater Ecology Complex is located at 3742 N. Williston Road.
