Florence gears up for the 9th annual adventure-filled Flo-Town 5K Run/Walk

Florence, South Carolina – The city of Florence is getting ready for the 9th Annual Flo-Town 5K Run/Walk, an event that promises perfect combination of physical activity and a fun way to spend the day with friends. The event, which is set for April 27, 2024, will be more than just a race. It will be an adventure that takes place on some of Florence’s most beautiful trails and historic sites.

The City of Florence Employee Wellness Program and the Florence Track Club have worked together to make this event possible. The race will begin at the City’s Waste Water Management Facility, which gives runners quick access to the Freedom Florence Connections on the Florence Trail System. These trails, which are in East Florence and cover about 8 miles, show off the area’s natural beauty and historical importance. They are especially close to Jeffries Creek and the Florence Stockade.

The route is designed to mesmerize participants with its natural pathways that snake through woods, across boardwalks, and around the Freedom Florence pond, eventually circling back near the old site of the Florence Stockade. A boardwalk bridge over the southern wall of the stockade is one of the course’s best parts. It leads into what was once a Confederate prison camp for Union soldiers during the American Civil War. This part, which is full of history, takes runners and walkers through an important part of American history. It ends at the modern LEED® Certified Administration & Laboratory Building, which has showers and bathrooms.

The Flo-Town 5K shows the energy of Florence no matter what the weather is like. It’s open to both experienced runners and casual walkers, as well as their furry friends. While the event is stroller-friendly, some parts of the trail may be hard to get through. Participants are encouraged to enjoy music as they traverse the course and are reminded to keep well-socialized dogs on a leash for everyone’s safety.

Registration for the event begins at 8:00 am on the day of the race, and the race is set to begin at 9:00 am at 1000 Stockdale Drive. Anyone who signs up by April 18 will get a T-shirt, which comes in several sizes for adults. The Flo-Town 5K Run/Walk is a chance to enjoy Florence’s natural and historical landscapes and support local sports at the same time. All proceeds go to the Florence Track Club.

People who sign up early (for $35) or late (for $45) will have a unique experience that includes both the challenge of the trail and the beauty of Florence’s long history.
