‘Attack the messenger’ becomes Trump’s favorite tool to control the narrative, the terrifying war on the press continues

Florida – Pressure around Washington has intensified in recent days as President Donald Trump lashes out at both the press and one of the country’s most prominent newspapers as he struggles to maintain his support even in red states like Florida and Texas.

The latest flare-up came after Trump unleashed a furious Truth Social post aimed at The New York Times, accusing the paper of distorting the reality of the administration’s actions during the war in Iran.

His anger appears rooted in a stretch of deeply unfavorable reporting, including stories that challenged official claims and raised new questions about the human cost of the conflict.

One of the most damaging reports cited by critics involved an investigation into the bombing of an Iranian girls’ school that killed 175 civilians.

The Times concluded it was likely the United States had struck the school, a finding Trump officials have repeatedly denied.

As scrutiny over the war mounted, Trump answered with a familiar strategy: attack the messenger.

“For those people that still read The Failing New York Times and, despite the fact that Iran has been totally OBLITERATED, Militarily, and otherwise, you would think that Iran is actually winning or, at the very least, doing quite well — But that’s not true, and The New York Times knows that it’s FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote.

He went further, demanding contrition from the newspaper.

“When does this Corrupt Media Outlet apologize for their LIES and horrible actions against me, my supporters, and our Country itself! HAVE THEY NO SHAME? HAVE THEY NO SENSE OF DECENCY?”

The outburst did not arrive in isolation. It followed another extraordinary clash involving Trump’s handling of sensitive military reporting and his increasingly aggressive rhetoric toward journalists.

That episode began after Iran shot down two U.S. military aircraft during the recent hostilities. Both pilots survived, but their rescue took place in stages. One was recovered on Friday, while the second remained missing until a successful operation on Sunday.

Trump later said the White House had intentionally withheld public confirmation about the missing pilot, arguing that silence was necessary while the rescue mission was still underway.

But that effort to control the timing of the information broke down when unnamed U.S. officials disclosed details to the Associated Press, revealing that the second pilot had not yet been recovered.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Trump made clear that he viewed the leak not just as a political embarrassment, but as a national security breach.

“We didn’t talk about the first one for an hour, then somebody leaked something, which we’ll hopefully find that leaker, we’re looking very hard,” he said.

From there, the remarks escalated sharply.

Trump suggested his administration would pressure the news outlet involved to reveal its source and threatened legal consequences if it refused.

“We think we’ll be able to find it out because we’re going to go to the media company that released it and we’re going to say ‘national security – give it up, or go to jail!’ And you know who we’re talking about,” he said.

He then took the threat further still.

“We have to find that leaker because that’s a sick person,” Trump said, before adding, “The person that did the story will go to jail if he doesn’t say!”

That language drew fresh attention because it went beyond condemning a leak and crossed into a direct warning toward journalists over confidential sourcing, one of the most sensitive fault lines in the long-running battle between executive power and press freedom.

The broader concern is no longer only about one leaked story or one angry social media post. It is about how far a president is willing to go when coverage turns against him during a moment of military and political strain.

The administration’s critics see a pattern forming: as difficult questions grow louder, Trump is not merely disputing reports but portraying major news organizations and individual journalists as enemies deserving punishment.

That pattern has become even more striking as the Iran conflict generates harsher headlines, sharper investigations, and a widening debate over transparency, accountability, and the true cost of war.

With Trump demanding apologies from the press while also threatening jail over reporting he dislikes, the conflict is no longer confined to the battlefield overseas. It is now unfolding just as intensely in the fight over who controls the story at home.
