Florence, South Carolina – The City of Florence is looking ahead to its next round of public service, and residents who want a voice in local decisions now have a clear opening.
Applications are being accepted for upcoming vacancies on several city boards and commissions, with a number of terms set to expire on June 30, 2026. The openings give residents a chance to bring their experience, ideas, and community knowledge into rooms where recommendations are made and long-term plans take shape. Applications are handled through the Municipal Clerk’s office and will remain on file for one year from the date they are submitted.

The list of vacancies reaches across many parts of city life. Florence is seeking applicants for the Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee, the City-County Agriculture Commission, the City-County Memorial Stadium Commission, the City of Florence Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Parks and Beautification Commission, the City-County Civic Center Commission, the Housing Authority, the Design Review Board, the Construction & Maintenance Board of Adjustments & Appeals, the Veterans Park Committee, the Resilience and Sustainability Advisory Committee, the Public Safety Citizen’s Review Board, and the City-County Convention and Visitors Commission.
Some boards focus on growth and development. The Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals help guide decisions tied to land use, planning, and local development. The Design Review Board, which meets on the second Wednesday of each month, reviews requests involving development and renovation of buildings in Historic Overlay Districts. Its membership includes roles for professionals such as an architect, historian, contractor, structural engineer, landscape design representative, downtown business representatives, and others with relevant experience.
Other openings are tied closely to public spaces and community identity. The Parks and Beautification Commission advises City Council and city staff on cultural, social, educational, historical, physical activity, leisure, park maintenance, and beautification efforts. The Veterans Park Committee assists the city with rules and regulations for use and activities at Veterans Park. Its members must be qualified voters and Florence County residents, with seats set aside for honorably discharged veterans and at-large members.
The Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee reviews revenue generated from the accommodations tax and makes recommendations on how it should be spent. A majority of its members must come from the hospitality industry, including at least two from lodging where applicable, and one member must represent cultural organizations.
City Council reviews applications as terms expire and when unexpected vacancies occur. For Florence residents, the process is more than a formality. It is an invitation to take part in the steady, often quiet work that helps shape how the city grows, preserves its history, supports public spaces, and plans for the years ahead.
