City of Columbia invites residents to apply for seats on city boards and commissions and help shape local decisions

Columbia, South Carolina – Columbia residents who want a closer role in local decision-making have a new window to step forward. The City of Columbia is now accepting applications for service on a wide range of boards and commissions, offering community members a chance to lend their time, experience and ideas to public work that touches many corners of city life.

The application period is open through Friday, June 26, 2026. More information is available through the city’s boards and commissions portal at https://boards.columbiasc.gov/.

The openings span several areas of civic service. Some panels focus on growth, housing, planning and property matters, including the Planning Commission, Columbia Housing Authority, Building Board of Adjustments and Appeals, Property Maintenance Board of Appeals and Richland County Board of Assessment Appeals. These groups help support public discussions tied to development, standards, appeals and the way Columbia continues to change.

Other opportunities center on the city’s appearance, history and long-term community character. Those include the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission, Historic Columbia Foundation and SC Memorial Park Commission. For residents who care deeply about the look, memory and shared spaces of the capital city, these boards offer a direct way to take part.

The city is also seeking applicants for committees connected to tourism, hospitality, business support and local investment. The Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee, Hospitality Tax Advisory Committee and Commercial Revolving Loan Fund are among the groups listed. Their work is tied to sectors that help shape Columbia’s economy and public services.

Several boards also focus on connection, preparedness and community life. These include the Columbia Prepares Advisory Committee, Columbia Town and Gown Committee, Food Policy Committee and Greater Columbia Community Relations Council. The Richland Lexington Airport District Commission is also included among the current opportunities.

City officials are inviting community members who want to share their time and expertise to apply before the deadline. The list is broad, and that is the point. Columbia’s boards and commissions rely on people with different backgrounds, skills and neighborhood perspectives.
