“We blew up their attempt”: Huge win for Dems, Schumer and Schiff declare total war as Trump’s project is defeated, for now

New York – A Republican effort to move roughly $1 billion in White House security funding through a fast-track Senate bill has hit a wall, and two prominent Democratic Senators, Chuck Schumer of New York and Adam Schiff of California, celebrated the win.

The block gave Democrats a sharp political victory in their fight against President Donald Trump’s disputed East Wing ballroom project.

The setback came after Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that the funding, as written, could not remain in a GOP-led immigration enforcement package under reconciliation rules.

The decision does not kill the broader project, and it does not stop Republicans from trying again.

But for now, it blocks their first attempt to push the money forward without needing 60 votes in the Senate.

The ruling immediately became a rallying point for Democrats, who have framed the proposal as an attempt to use taxpayer money to support what they call an extravagant presidential construction project.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer celebrated the decision in a statement posted by Senate Democrats, saying Republicans had tried to make Americans pay for “Trump’s billion-dollar ballroom.”

“Republicans tried to make taxpayers foot the bill for Trump’s billion-dollar ballroom. Senate Democrats fought back — and blew up their first attempt,” Sen. Schumer wrote on X.

“Now Ballroom Republicans say they’re going back to the drawing board to try again. And Senate Democrats will be ready to stop them again. Americans don’t want a ballroom. They don’t need a ballroom. And they sure as hell should not be forced to pay for one.”

Sen. Adam Schiff also hailed the decision, calling it “an important victory” while warning that the fight is not over.

“BREAKING: An important victory in stopping $1 billion of your tax dollars from being used to pay for Trump’s golden ballroom. But the fight is not over, as Senate Republicans promise to keep trying. They will fight for Trump’s ballroom, but not to help you make ends meet,” Schiff wrote in a post shared on social media.

At the center of the fight is Trump’s long-sought plan to build a large State Ballroom as part of a rebuilt East Wing of the White House. The project was announced in July 2025, with the administration saying it would be funded by private donors, including Trump himself.

Construction began later that year, and demolition of the East Wing started in October 2025. The planned addition has been described as about 90,000 square feet, with a ballroom intended to host far larger events than the current East Room can accommodate.

Trump and his allies have argued that the White House needs modern facilities for state dinners, major diplomatic gatherings and future administrations. Supporters say the ballroom itself is privately financed and that the separate federal funding request is aimed at security upgrades around the White House complex, including visitor screening, Secret Service training, structural protections and technology to address new threats.

Democrats see it differently.

To them, the funding request blurs the line between private construction and public subsidy. They argue that even if donors are paying for the ballroom’s core structure, taxpayers could still end up covering the expensive security framework needed to support it.

The parliamentarian’s ruling focused on procedure, not on the political argument over the ballroom itself.

MacDonough found that the provision could not be included as written in the Republican package. That matters because Republicans were trying to move the funding through reconciliation, a process that allows certain budget-related legislation to pass with a simple majority and avoid the Senate’s 60-vote threshold.

The disputed $1 billion was tied to a larger Republican immigration and border enforcement measure. According to reports, the broader package remains largely intact, but GOP leaders must now rewrite the White House security language or pursue a path that would require more Democratic support.

The fight lands at a politically sensitive moment. The ballroom project has already drawn criticism over its cost, scale, design and effect on the historic White House grounds.

Legal challenges have also surrounded construction, while review and approval questions have kept the project under national scrutiny. The National Capital Planning Commission approved the design in April 2026, but court battles have continued over how far construction can proceed.

For Democrats, the ruling gives them a clear message: they stopped, at least temporarily, a major Trump-backed project they say reflects misplaced priorities. Schumer and Schiff both used the moment to contrast Republican support for the ballroom with economic pressures facing ordinary Americans.

For Republicans, the answer is that White House security is not optional. They argue the complex must be strengthened in a dangerous environment and that the upgrades would serve future presidents, not only Trump.

Still, the political optics are difficult to escape. A grand ballroom, rising from the demolished East Wing, has become more than an architectural project. It is now a symbol in Washington’s larger fight over power, money, image and priorities.

The victory Democrats are celebrating may be temporary. Republicans have already signaled they will revise the language and try again. But for now, Trump’s massive ballroom plan has suffered a public setback, and Democrats have turned a procedural ruling into a broader warning: they intend to fight every attempt to make taxpayers cover the cost of the president’s gilded vision.
