Florence residents invited to safely dispose of unused prescription drugs during DEA Take Back event on October 26

Florence, South Carolina – The Florence Police Department is holding the DEA National RX Take Back Day on October 26, 2024 in a coordinated attempt to lower prescription drug abuse and overdose rates. From 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, this event is set to take place at the Walmart on 230 N Beltline Dr. The Florence Police Department is inviting members of the community to safely dispose of obsolete, unwanted, or unused drugs.

Part of a national campaign, the project seeks to solve a major public health concern by eliminating potentially harmful prescription medications from homes. Every pill gathered reduces one more chance for drug abuse that may have terrible results. Florence PD stresses the need of the community’s involvement in guaranteeing safer surroundings free from the dangers related with prescription drug addiction.

Residents are urged to go through their medicine cabinets and submit any outdated or extraneous drugs to Walmart’s collecting station. The procedure is meant to be quick and anonymous, with no questions asked, therefore enabling people to drop off their prescriptions without any trouble.

While prescribed pharmaceuticals are accepted, some things including syringes, sharps, illegal substances, and liquids not sealed in their original container cannot be accepted. This meets with disposal rules and guarantees the safety of persons handling the collections.

Coordinated with municipal authorities and health regulators, the event goes beyond just dumping of trash. Often the first step towards more severe substance abuse problems, it is a proactive approach toward teaching the public about the risks of prescription drug abuse. Removing these drugs from circulation not only prevents accidental overdoses but also lowers the likelihood of these drugs finding the wrong hands.

The DEA has created a website for people who cannot make it to Walmart or are seeking further information. This page offers information on various collecting sites as well as tools to help individuals grasp the effects of prescription medication abuse. Lt. Kendrick Spears is available for contact at 843-665-3191 for community members seeking more details or looking to get involved in other ways.
