Florence officials excited as Carolina Theatre embarks on its latest round of renovations

Florence, South Carolina – The historical Carolina Theatre in Florence, an outstanding reminder of historical beauty built about 1925, is poised to undergo its latest set of restorations. Located on Dargan Street, formerly a basic barn, this theatre is ready for a metamorphosis that will combine its historical legacy with modern needs.

In an interview with WBTW, Assistant City Manager Clint Moore shared project excitement. Officials are working to revitalize this historic site and carry on its history right in the middle of the district, he said. Admired as a fundamental part of the cultural and historical identity of the community, the theater initially underwent major renovations back in the 1940s.

The most recent update follows a $500,000 investment made in January that addressed important upgrades including a new roof and ceiling to help to minimize damage caused by Hurricane Florence. A $270,000 grant from the state’s historic preservation fund supported this project and helped to keep the theater’s original architectural appeal.

Craftsmen painstakingly rebuilt the unique scalloped-tier ceiling of the theater, a feature lost to flood damage but now honored in respect to the building’s original magnificence. The preservation projects aim not just to restore but also to improve by respectfully blending the old with the new.

City authorities have moved toward future-proofing the arena, securing a $2 million bond matched by equivalent state money set for a significant second round of improvements. Plans include for updated lighting and sound systems along with a three-tiered floor and a larger stage. These improvements seek to make the Carolina Theatre a flexible venue able to hold a range of events, from neighborhood meetings and weddings to state-level conferences and concerts.

“This is a building that helps us create that sense of place downtown and really drives that molding of the two worlds, where you have all the historic elements and what people think of as your historic downtown, and then all the modern amenities that we have,” Moore added.

With building scheduled for the next 12 months, the Carolina Theatre is set to open a new chapter honoring its rich legacy and looking forward an interesting and inclusive future.
