“You’re probably part of it”: Sen. Schumer’s “pray for safety” post explodes as furious users blame him for ‘inciting violence at Trump dinner’

New York – Sen. Chuck Schumer’s brief message of concern after the shooting scare at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner quickly turned into a political flashpoint, as critics on X flooded the New York Senator’s replies and accused Democratic leaders of helping create the tense climate they were now condemning.

The incident unfolded Saturday night at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, members of the administration, journalists, lawmakers and other guests had gathered for the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

According to Reuters, the evening was suddenly interrupted when an armed man rushed toward a security checkpoint near the event, triggering a fast law enforcement response and panic among attendees.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California.

Per the official reports, he was armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives when he charged the checkpoint outside the ballroom area.

The Secret Service and other law enforcement personnel moved in quickly, and Allen was tackled and taken into custody before he could enter the main event space.

Inside the venue, the sound of gunfire caused guests to duck for cover as security teams rushed to protect officials.

President Trump and other top figures were moved away from the room for safety. One law enforcement officer was struck during the exchange, but the officer’s protective vest stopped the round, and officials later said the officer was expected to recover.

As the news spread, political leaders from both parties began posting reactions.

Schumer, the New York Democrat and Senate Minority Leader, wrote on X: “I am closely monitoring the unfolding situation at the White House Correspondents Dinner. I’m grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and am praying everyone remains safe.” His message was also quoted by local and national outlets covering reactions from New York and other political figures.

But instead of being received as a routine statement after a violent incident, Schumer’s post drew sharp criticism almost immediately.

Many users accused him and other Democrats of offering prayers after spending years, in their view, using harsh language about Trump and his supporters.

The replies turned Schumer’s message into a public argument over political blame, with critics saying Democratic leaders could not separate the shooting from the broader tone of national politics.

“F** you, you s***bag. You’re one of the pieces of sh*t spurring this hatred. Go *** yourself,” one user wrote.

“Your deranged rhetoric likely played a part in causing this, another user wrote.

“You and your ratfuck comrades created an environment where such a thing was even possible. ROT IN HELL!” visibly disturbed @VetWarrior76 added.

“I’m sure you are monitoring this situation. You’re probably part of it,” another user commented.”

The criticism did not come only from anonymous accounts. Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who is running for governor, said in a statement that he was grateful Trump, Melania Trump, Cabinet officials and guests were safe, then added that “violence has no place in political discourse” and that Democrats should “calm down the vitriolic rhetoric against the President.”

Other elected officials used a less partisan tone. Rep. Mike Lawler of New York thanked the Secret Service and law enforcement for their quick action.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis said she was thankful the president and other attendees were safe and called for support for law enforcement and the Secret Service.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also thanked law enforcement and said she was praying for everyone in attendance.

Still, Schumer’s comment section became one of the clearest examples of how quickly the incident moved from a security emergency to a bitter political fight online.

Users accused Democrats of hypocrisy, blamed inflammatory rhetoric for raising tensions, and argued that simple expressions of concern were no longer enough.

The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

Authorities have said Allen is in custody, and early reports indicated investigators were still working to determine why he allegedly targeted the event.
