Want to buy a home? City of Columbia offers practical support for residents preparing to buy their first home

Columbia, South Carolina – The City of Columbia Community Development Department is preparing to welcome residents for a homebuyer workshop designed to make the path toward owning a home clearer, less confusing, and more connected to real help.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Virginia Bedford Community Center, located at 1113 Recreation Dr. in Columbia. The event is being presented as a one-stop session for people who want to better understand the home buying process, especially first-time buyers who may not know where to begin.

For many families, buying a home can feel like a big dream wrapped in paperwork, financial questions, and unfamiliar steps. This workshop is meant to bring those pieces into one room. Attendees will have the chance to learn from a live expert panel, connect with local professionals, and speak directly with people who work in different parts of the homeownership process.

The session will also include on-site resources and vendors, giving participants a chance to gather information in a practical way. Rather than searching alone or trying to understand the process piece by piece, residents can ask questions, compare options, and hear guidance from professionals who help buyers move from early planning to the closing table.

A key part of the workshop will focus on the pros and cons of homeownership. That discussion is especially important for buyers who are still deciding whether now is the right time to purchase a home. Attendees can expect information on making informed financial decisions, understanding responsibilities that come with owning property, and preparing for the steps ahead.

The workshop will also cover the journey from pre-approval to closing, giving participants a better sense of what happens after they decide to move forward. That includes learning how buyers prepare financially, what professionals may be involved, and what questions should be asked along the way.

City officials are framing the event as a practical opportunity for residents who want tools, guidance, and confidence before entering the housing market. The goal is not only to explain homeownership, but to help people feel better prepared for it.
