The Woodley: New 102-apartment complex proposed for North Main Street, Columbia

Columbia, South Carolina – A new apartment project might pop up on North Main Street in Columbia soon. The plan is for two apartment buildings that are four stories high each, along with a center for residents and a little shop space on the corner of Scott and Main streets, right where you enter Main Street from Elmwood Avenue.

Named The Woodley, this project would offer 102 apartments with options for one or two bedrooms. The developers also plan to make 91 parking spots on the surface and an additional nine on the street, as shown in plans given to Columbia’s city officials. Plus, there will be 1,800 square feet of space for either a shop or an office.

If it gets the green light, this project would add to a growing list of new places to live being built or proposed along North Main Street, contributing to the area’s development over the last few years.

Just a bit further up from The Woodley, at the higher corner of Scott and Main streets, there’s a plan by Steve Middleton to turn an old car dealership into fancy apartments with 250 residential units and a big parking garage for 360 cars. This idea was first brought up in 2021, and the plan was updated this January.

These new apartments would be surrounded by a bunch of businesses that are already doing well on North Main, like the Curiosity Coffee Bar, Sweet Temptations Bakery, and Uncle Willie’s Grocery Store. Right behind where the apartments would be, on Sumter Street, there are places like Indah Coffee and Il Focolare Pizza in the Cottontown area.

In another part of this street, developers are turning an old shopping center at 301 Sunset Drive into a big apartment complex with 300 units. They’ve just got a tax break for it, and it should be ready by early 2027.

There’s also Benton Crossing, another apartment building being built near North Main, at the corner of River Drive and Benton Street. It’s going to have around 60 apartments over four floors. Alongside these new homes, new shops like Peak Drift Brewing have opened, and the area has gotten prettier with street fixes and the upgrade of Hyatt Park.
