South Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker: A timeless holiday tradition returns with new energy and beloved charm.

Florence, South Carolina (Press release) — For generations, South Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker has captivated audiences with its blend of holiday magic, timeless artistry, and Southern charm. This year, Florence’s family holiday tradition returns to the Francis Marion Performing Arts Center on December 18th and 19th, offering two unique performances that honor tradition while infusing new energy into this beloved tale. As an annual fixture in Florence’s arts calendar, South Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker continues to transport audiences of all ages to a world of enchantment.

Returning audiences can anticipate Nutcracker’s signature Southern charm to infuse every scene. The custom backdrops, introduced last year, are designed to reflect the rich history and traditions of the South. From the jubilant Stahlbaum holiday gathering to the vibrant Land of Sweets, each moment is carefully crafted to bring Clara’s journey to life. This season, the stunning set and costume design merge classical elegance with a modern twist, captivating both newcomers and seasoned ballet-goers.

Among the most unforgettable scenes is the romantic pas de deux between Louisa and the Lead Cadet, a dazzling performance that beautifully captures the magic and romance of the story. Adding to the excitement, the lively Candy Canes scene bursts with color and energy, and the Neapolitan dancers deliver spirited choreography that celebrates diversity within the Land of Sweets.

Under the direction of CEO and Artistic Director William Starrett, South Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker reflects classical traditions blended with a modern aesthetic. Starrett’s vision preserves the production’s roots while appealing to contemporary audiences, bridging generations through shared holiday traditions and a love for the arts.
