Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to honor Memorial Day by staying safe

Florence County, South Carolina – As families across Florence County gather for Memorial Day weekend, local law enforcement is urging residents to keep safety at the center of the holiday while also remembering the deeper meaning behind it.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office reminded the community that Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It is a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to the country. As people visit loved ones, travel, spend time outdoors or enjoy gatherings with friends, officials are asking everyone to make choices that protect both themselves and those around them.

Deputies are expected to be out across the county throughout the weekend as part of efforts to help residents enjoy the holiday safely. The message from the sheriff’s office is simple: a safe weekend begins with responsible decisions.

Drivers are being reminded to stay alert behind the wheel, avoid distractions and never drive while impaired. With more people expected on local roads during the holiday period, even a quick glance at a phone or one poor decision after drinking can put lives at risk. Officials are also urging residents to plan ahead if alcohol is part of their celebrations.

Safety concerns are not limited to the roads. The sheriff’s office is also asking adults to watch children closely around water, especially during family cookouts, pool visits or outdoor gatherings. A few seconds of inattention can quickly become dangerous, which is why close supervision remains one of the most important steps families can take.

Residents who plan to be away from home are also encouraged to lock their vehicles and houses. Simple precautions, such as securing doors and removing valuables from sight, can help prevent theft and keep neighborhoods safer during the busy weekend.

By driving responsibly, staying aware and protecting homes, vehicles and families, Florence County residents can honor the sacrifices of America’s heroes while keeping the community safe.
