Charleston, South Carolina – South Carolina’s Lowcountry is set for another major military infrastructure boost after the U.S. Coast Guard announced more than $212 million in new investments for Base Charleston in North Charleston, a move praised Monday by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott.
The funding will support two large projects aimed at strengthening the Coast Guard’s long-term operations in the region, improving daily support for service members and preparing the base for future missions.
Scott said the investment reflects South Carolina’s growing role in the nation’s defense network and the continued importance of Charleston as a strategic military hub.
“South Carolina continues to play a vital role in our national security and supporting the men and women who serve,” said Sen. Scott, according to a press release sent to Florence News Journal.
“These investments at Base Charleston, made possible by the Working Families Tax Cuts, will strengthen Coast Guard operations, improve quality of life for service members and their families, and strengthen the Lowcountry’s position as a strategic military hub. I’m proud to support these efforts to modernize our military infrastructure while creating economic opportunity here at home.”

The projects are being funded through a wider $25 billion investment in the Coast Guard included in the Working Families Tax Cuts. At Base Charleston, the largest piece is a nearly $117 million contract to rebuild and modernize Pier Mike.
Once completed, the upgraded pier will be able to permanently homeport four Offshore Patrol Cutters and support one visiting cutter.
The Coast Guard also awarded a separate contract of nearly $96 million for a new combined medical and dental facility, a new visitor’s center and other support tied to mission readiness.
Together, the improvements are expected to touch both the operational side of the base and the everyday needs of the people stationed there.
Vice Admiral Jo-Ann Burdian, commander of Coast Guard Atlantic Area, said the projects carry major importance for the service’s future fleet and its personnel.
“I am excited for the incredible potential these projects have to improve the welfare of our Servicemembers and their families, to homeport our future fleet of Offshore Patrol Cutters and to operationalize the generous investments being made in our Service by the American people,” Burdian said.
“Our people are our greatest asset, and everything we do on their behalf, to ensure they are ready, trained and well-supported will enable us to act with clarity, cohesion, and purpose to deliver the outcomes our Nation expects.”
