Riverfront Park to host car wash event aimed at raising funds for Rapid Shelter Columbia

Columbia, South Carolina – The City of Columbia Homeless Services Department, together with United Way of the Midlands, is planning to organize the “Shine for Shelter Car Wash Fundraiser” at Riverfront Park on Friday, April 25, 2025 in a lively show of community involvement. Aiming to use local volunteers’ strength to assist Rapid Shelter Columbia, a key project helping people living in homelessness, this event is part of the larger United Way Volunteer Week.

Columbia residents are invited to Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel Street, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to either have their cars cleaned, volunteer at the event, or provide donations. Every penny from this day goes to Rapid Shelter Columbia to improve the vital services and resources it offers to the homeless population.

A week-long United Way of the Midlands campaign, which from April 21-26 will organize 1,000 volunteers across 100 teams to carry out 100 meaningful community projects, is heavily influenced by the fundraiser. Each team, consisting of 5-10 members, commits to raising a minimum of $100 per person. The money collected will be split; half will go straight to the United Way and the other half will help host partner groups or local organizations beyond the United Way’s direct influence at a 75/25 ratio.

The event offers a range of activities for individuals who want to give more than just a vehicle wash, and it provides a great chance for community members to actively participate in action-based giving. Every effort contributes toward the common goal of assisting and improving the lives of Columbia’s most vulnerable people whether by raising money, spreading the word, or just participating in the day’s events.

By going to the specific page by United Way of the Midlands, volunteers and participants can register their teams, choose their projects, and begin their fundraising efforts. To maximize the effect and reach of this community-driven project, sharing the event with friends, family, and colleagues is also recommended.

The Shine for Shelter Car Wash Fundraiser not only provides an opportunity to help but also to see personally the dedication of the community to generate enduring change in the lives of people facing everyday struggles caused by homelessness. It’s more than just a car wash; it’s a chance to highlight the concerns in the community and to unite to address them directly.
