MAHLE Behr Charleston Inc. to cease operations, more than 460 workers affected

North Charleston, South Carolina – By the end of this year, over 460 people in South Carolina will lose their jobs when a truck parts factory in the Charleston area closes down.

The factory, Mahle Behr, with its main office in Germany, plans to shut down its facility at 4500 Leeds Ave. Starting April 12, it will begin to lay off all its employees. This was revealed in a document the company submitted to the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce.

Florence News Journal attempts to contact the company for comments were unsuccessful.

This factory specializes in producing air conditioning and radiator components for big commercial trucks.

Mahle Behr, a leading global automotive supplier, has been facing financial difficulties, suffering significant losses in 2021 and 2022. The company has around 72,000 employees worldwide.

Despite expanding its North Charleston site in 2018, the company has encountered tough times recently. It attributes this downturn to rising costs in utilities, materials, and labor.
