Dear Editor,
I read about Attorney General Alan Wilson joining other states to push for stronger parental rights in school decisions, and I’m glad to see it. Parents should have the final say over what happens with their own children, that’s not controversial, it’s just how it’s always been.
I raised my child in the early 2000s. Back then, this wasn’t even a conversation. If something important came up at school involving my kid’s well-being or personal matters, the school called the parent. Full stop. It was understood that moms and dads are the ones responsible for raising their children, not teachers or administrators making big calls behind our backs.
You know what being a parent stands for. It means you’re the one who knows your child best, who carries the weight of the decisions that shape their life. When schools start keeping families in the dark on serious issues, that basic role gets undermined.
I support any effort that puts parents back where they belong, in charge and informed. Our kids deserve that, and so do the families trying to do right by them.
