Interstate 126 Westbound closures scheduled for Carolina Crossroads project progress

Columbia, South Carolina – As part of the ongoing Carolina Crossroads project, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced that Interstate 126 Westbound will be closed for short periods of time in two occasions in the upcoming period. Drivers should be aware that their normal commute may be temporarily disrupted, with closures aimed at facilitating construction work.

Closures to take place between Elmwood Avenue and Colonial Life Boulevard

Scheduled to occur between Elmwood Avenue and Colonial Life Boulevard, these closures will see Interstate 126 Westbound temporarily shut down on two separate occasions. Thursday, March 7 and Sunday, March 10 are periods you should put on your calendar. Each closure will begin just after midnight and last for about 30 minutes.

The SCDOT has warned, though, that these times may not be exact. Changes could be made depending on how the building work is going or on unplanned events like bad weather. To make sure the work is finished, backup times have been set up to account for these kinds of things.

Transportation and placement of new bridge beams is the main reason for these temporary closures. These beams are part of the Carolina Crossroads project’s work to improve infrastructure. The SCDOT wants to make this transportation route safer and more efficient by putting these beams in place permanently.

During the closures, local police and transportation officials will be on hand to help control traffic ensuring that disruptions to drivers are minimized. In addition, the SCDOT has said that regular lane closures at night will continue during this time as part of the project’s work.

Drivers in this area should plan their trips around these times and keep up with any updates or changes to the closure schedule.

The SCDOT’s plan to improve transportation facilities through the Carolina Crossroads project is a step toward making travel safer and more efficient for people living in and visiting South Carolina.
