Florence residents invited to a free tree distribution event at the City Center Farmers Market

Florence, South Carolina – On Saturday, October 4, 2025, Florence residents will have the chance to bring home a free tree during the Florence Canopy Session, a special giveaway event focused on expanding the city’s urban forest. Hosted at the City Center Farmers Market at 200 Sanborn Street, the event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and is organized through a partnership between the City of Florence, Trees SC, Duke Energy, and Trees Upstate.

The tree giveaway will operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with each participant eligible to receive one tree and, potentially, a second depending on supply. Organizers note that some tree species may require a truck or trailer for transport due to their size.

In order to receive a tree, participants will be asked to attend a brief educational session. These sessions are designed to help residents understand how to properly plant and care for their new trees. Topics include how to plant a container tree, how to take care of trees and shrubs after planting, and when a homeowner should call in a professional arborist.

“Your support makes a real difference,” organizers shared. “Every donated item helps bring comfort, dignity, and hope.” While the original quote refers to a different event, the sentiment applies to this tree giveaway as well—community participation in this event helps make Florence greener, healthier, and more vibrant.

A Diverse Selection of Trees Available

Participants will be able to choose from a wide selection of tree varieties, including:

  • Flame Maples

  • Bills Blue Deodar

  • Forest Pansy Redbuds

  • Fringe Trees

  • American Yellowwoods

  • Cherokee Princess Dogwoods

  • Kousa Pink Dogwoods

  • Nellie Stevens Hollies

  • Liberty Hollies

  • Bracken’s Brown Beauty Magnolias

  • Teddy Bear Magnolias

  • Jane Magnolias

  • WildFire Black Gums

  • Okame Cherries

  • Swamp White Oaks

  • Swanee Brave Taxodium

  • Bald Cypress Trees

These trees are suited to thrive in the local climate and will enhance Florence’s green spaces and neighborhoods.

The Florence Canopy Session is more than just a giveaway—it’s a community effort to promote environmental awareness and education. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a first-time tree planter, this event offers the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to make a lasting difference.
