City of Florence to host fair housing seminar educating residents on risks of predatory loans and how to protect their rights

Florence, South Carolina – The City of Florence will host an important seminar meant to raise understanding of the risks of predatory loans and unfair housing practices in respect of Fair Housing Month. The City Center, Room 101, 324 W. Evans Street in Florence, South Carolina will host the event from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

This free public session gives locals a chance to acquire knowledge of the rules and protections in place to guarantee fair housing access. Emphasizing predatory loan strategies and other deceptive practices that typically target disadvantaged populations, the event will be both an educational session and a call to action for people who want to safeguard their financial and housing rights.

Two prominent figures in the housing policy area will guide the conversation: Tiara Pitts, Director of Fair Housing Policy, and Nike E. Kremydas, Esq., RCE and CEO of South Carolina Realtors. Covering real-life situations, current housing discrimination trends, and what people can do to safeguard themselves from unfair treatment in the housing market, their combined knowledge guarantees an informative and educational session.

Often including high interest rates, hefty fees, and deceptive loan terms, predatory lending may trap people in long-term financial hardship. These policies disproportionately harm first-time homeowners, retirees, and individuals who have little financial knowledge. The session will look into how these programs operate and what actions can be taken to identify and report them.

The event is part of the City of Florence’s broader commitment to promoting equal housing opportunities for all residents. As part of this initiative, the city is encouraging participation from community members, housing professionals, and anyone interested in learning more about fair housing policies.

For those seeking more information, Retha S. Brown is available for questions at (843) 665-3175 or by email at [email protected].

This Fair Housing Month, the City of Florence urges residents to stay informed and stand up against housing discrimination in all its forms.
