Columbia, South Carolina – This spring, the Community Development Department of the City of Columbia is celebrating 50 years of service marking a major milestone. The department announced a whole week of activities during its annual Community Development Week, April 21 to April 25, 2025, to honor the occasion. The event will underline decades of effort devoted to enhancing communities, building partnerships, and planning Columbia’s future.
The week kicks off on Monday, April 21, with a special brunch at Segra Park’s Club Lounge. This invitation-only event gathers important stakeholders—including banks, cooperating agencies, and local leaders—for a moment of reflection and appreciation. Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, City Council members, and other city officials will be in attendance to help commemorate the department’s 50th anniversary and its longstanding commitment to the community.
On Tuesday, the focus turns to giving back. In collaboration with Richland County’s Community Development team, the department will host a Day of Service at Harvest Hope Food Bank. From 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., volunteers will lend a hand to support those in need, emphasizing the department’s mission of community care and connection.

Midweek, on Wednesday, April 23, a guided neighborhood tour will showcase several federally funded projects that highlight the impact of the department’s work. Stops include the Eau Claire Health Clinic, Lorick Place, Toasty Hot Spot, the Village at Congaree Pointe, and Edisto Place. The tour will provide local leaders and city officials with an up-close look at the tangible improvements made across Columbia through housing and community development programs.
On Thursday, the celebration will shift to digital platforms. The department is encouraging residents and supporters to join in on social media by using the hashtag #CD50th. The goal is to reflect on past achievements, share memories, and spotlight the progress made over the last five decades.
The week concludes with a festive community block party on Friday, April 25, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 2300 Bull Street. Open to the public, the event will feature food trucks from the Office of Business Opportunities, music, and booths from various city departments. It’s a chance for residents to learn more about the services available to them and to celebrate the department’s continuing mission.
Since its founding, the Community Development Department has played a vital role in expanding homeownership, supporting economic development, and enhancing neighborhood life in Columbia. By leveraging local, state, and federal funds, and working in partnership with other organizations, the department has helped shape the city into a thriving and inclusive place to live.
