Harris says abortion rights, assault weapons ban, and Policing Act laws are the first to pass if Biden wins re-election

Vice President Kamala Harris shared a detailed plan for new laws that the Democratic Party will push for if they win control of both parts of Congress. She highlighted how important the next elections are and mentioned that President Joe Biden is ready to approve these important pieces of legislation. The laws they want to pass deal with many topics, from women’s reproductive rights to gun control and police reform, reflecting the administration’s commitment to a progressive policy agenda.

A bill that reinstates the protections of Roe v. Wade

A major part of their plan is to bring back the legal protections provided by Roe v. Wade, as Kamala Harris mentioned in a post on X on Thursday. Roe v. Wade was a crucial court decision that said women have the right to decide to have an abortion.

This decision has been debated and challenged many times. Since Roe v. Wade has been overturned, pro-abortion advocates and supporters have been stressing out how vital it is to protect the rights of women to choose and to make sure they can get safe and legal abortions.

An assault weapons ban

The agenda also includes a proposed assault weapons ban, responding to the ongoing concerns surrounding gun violence in the United States. The Biden-Harris administration aims to address the alarming frequency of mass shootings and enhance public safety by restricting access to high-capacity firearms. This aligns with the broader push for stricter gun control measures to curb the devastating impact of gun-related incidents across the nation.

The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Harris also highlighted the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act as a key legislative priority. This act is named after George Floyd, a man whose death led to widespread protests against unfair treatment by the police. Such a law would bring significant changes to law enforcement practices and how policing in the country works. Provisions in the bill include enhanced accountability measures for police officers, limiting certain police methods, and providing better training to ensure policing is fair.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and Freedom to Vote Act

The plan also includes the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act. These laws are about making sure the election process is strong and fair. They’re designed to fight against rules that make it hard for some people to vote, making sure that everyone has the same chance to participate in voting. This shows the administration’s dedication to democracy and making sure every citizen can exercise their right to vote.
