Funding

Funding and Ownership Policy

Florence News Journal is committed to transparency about how our newsroom is funded, how our publication operates, and how we protect editorial independence.

This page explains the funding sources that support our work and the safeguards we use to keep business relationships separate from newsroom decisions.

Ownership and Operation

Florence News Journal is independently operated.

The publication is not owned, operated, controlled, or editorially directed by a national news network, political organization, government agency, campaign, public-relations firm, advocacy group, or outside media conglomerate.

Editorial decisions are made independently by the newsroom and are guided by accuracy, local relevance, public interest, fairness, and value to readers in Florence, Florence County, and the surrounding Pee Dee region.

How Florence News Journal Is Funded

Florence News Journal may be funded through several sources, including:

  • Owner or operator funding
  • Reader donations or voluntary reader support
  • Local advertising
  • Local sponsored content
  • Display advertising
  • In-content advertising
  • Newsletter or digital sponsorships
  • Advertising technology partners and ad networks

These funding sources help support the costs of operating a digital news publication, including reporting, editing, hosting, technology, photography, design, research, administration, and audience services.

Advertising Partners

Florence News Journal may work with advertising networks, ad exchanges, sponsored-content platforms, and digital advertising services to display ads on the site.

These may include Google AdSense, Mediavine, Revcontent, and other advertising companies or technology providers, where applicable.

Advertising partners may place display ads, in-content ads, native advertising units, or other advertising formats across the site. These advertising relationships do not control our editorial coverage, article selection, reporting methods, source selection, headlines, conclusions, or publication decisions.

Local Sponsored Content

Florence News Journal may publish sponsored content from local businesses, organizations, institutions, or community partners.

Sponsored content is separate from independent editorial reporting. When sponsored content appears, it should be clearly labeled as sponsored, paid, promotional, partner content, advertising, or another similar disclosure so readers can understand the nature of the material.

Sponsors may not require favorable editorial coverage as a condition of sponsorship. Sponsors do not receive control over independent newsroom coverage.

Reader Donations

Florence News Journal may accept voluntary donations or reader support.

Reader donations help support the publication, but donors do not receive control over editorial decisions. Donations do not guarantee coverage, favorable treatment, removal of coverage, or influence over newsroom judgment.

Florence News Journal reserves the right to decline or return donations if accepting them could create a conflict of interest or undermine public trust.

Political Independence

Florence News Journal is not politically owned, politically funded, or politically operated.

The newsroom does not exist to advance a political party, campaign, candidate, committee, public official, advocacy organization, or political agenda.

Florence News Journal may cover political issues, elections, public officials, government decisions, public policy, and civic debates when those matters are newsworthy and relevant to readers. Such coverage is based on reporting, public interest, documentation, and local relevance — not political funding, political affiliation, or partisan direction.

Separation of Business and Editorial Decisions

Florence News Journal maintains a separation between business relationships and editorial decisions.

Advertisers, sponsors, donors, advertising networks, and commercial partners do not decide:

  • What stories we cover
  • Which sources we use
  • How stories are framed
  • What headlines are published
  • What conclusions are reached
  • Whether a story is updated, removed, or withheld
  • How public officials, businesses, organizations, or individuals are covered

Editorial decisions are made by the newsroom.

No Advance Review by Advertisers or Sponsors

Advertisers, sponsors, donors, and commercial partners do not receive advance review of independent editorial articles.

They may not request edits, removals, favorable treatment, or changes to independent newsroom content as a condition of advertising, sponsorship, donation, or business relationship.

Conflicts of Interest

Florence News Journal works to avoid financial relationships that could compromise, or appear to compromise, editorial independence.

When a potential conflict of interest exists, the publication may disclose the relationship, assign coverage to another contributor, decline an advertisement or sponsorship, or take other steps to protect reader trust.

Sponsored and Advertising Disclosures

Advertising and sponsored material should be clearly identified so readers can distinguish paid content from independent editorial coverage.

Labels may include:

  • Sponsored
  • Sponsored Content
  • Paid Partnership
  • Promotional Content
  • Partner Message
  • Affiliate Disclosure

Florence News Journal does not intentionally present paid promotional content as independent reporting.

Use of Revenue

Revenue received by Florence News Journal may be used to support newsroom and publication operations, including reporting, editing, publishing, technology, hosting, website maintenance, photography, software, research, administration, audience development, and other operating expenses.

Accountability to Readers

Florence News Journal’s first responsibility is to readers.

We believe readers should know how a publication is funded and whether outside interests influence coverage. Our policy is to maintain editorial independence, disclose paid content clearly, and separate newsroom judgment from commercial relationships.
