Columbia, South Carolina – For many people, buying a home begins with a dream but quickly turns into a long list of questions. How much can I afford? What does pre-approval mean? Who do I talk to first? What happens before closing? In Columbia, city officials are preparing to bring those answers into one room.
The City of Columbia Community Development Department will host a homebuyer workshop on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Virginia Bedford Community Center, located at 1113 Recreation Dr. in Columbia.
The event is designed as a one-stop session for residents who want to better understand the home buying process before taking one of the biggest financial steps of their lives.

The workshop is especially aimed at first-time buyers, but it may also be helpful for anyone who wants a clearer look at what homeownership requires. Instead of leaving residents to sort through paperwork, lender terms, inspections, contracts and closing details on their own, the session will give attendees a chance to learn directly from people who work in the field.
Organizers say the message is simple: “Your path to homeownership starts here!” The event will allow attendees to learn, ask questions and connect directly with industry professionals who can help explain the process from the early planning stage to the final closing table.
A live expert panel will be part of the evening, giving participants access to professionals who can discuss different parts of buying a home. The workshop will also include local professionals, on-site resources and vendors, creating a setting where residents can gather information in a practical and approachable way.
Among the topics expected to be covered are the pros and cons of homeownership, an area that can be just as important as the excitement of buying a house. Owning a home can provide stability and long-term value, but it also comes with responsibilities, costs and decisions that buyers should understand before moving forward.
The session will also walk attendees through the steps from pre-approval to closing. That part of the process can often feel confusing for new buyers, especially when financial decisions, lender requirements and timelines begin to overlap. By breaking the process into clearer steps, the workshop aims to help residents make more informed choices.
The Community Development Department is encouraging interested residents not to miss the opportunity to gain tools for successful homeownership.
Registration is available through the city’s Community Development events and meetings page at https://communitydevelopment.columbiasc.gov/events-meetings/.
For Columbia residents thinking about buying a first home, the June workshop offers more than a basic information session. It is a chance to ask real questions, meet local experts and begin the journey with a stronger sense of direction.
