“I hope Ken wipes the floor with your RINO”: Texas Sen. Cornyn’s savage jab at Paxton backfires spectacularly

Texas – Texas’ Republican Senate runoff has entered its final stretch with all the calm of a dust storm, and Sen. John Cornyn’s latest attack on Attorney General Ken Paxton shows just how sharp the race has become.

Cornyn, who is fighting for a fifth term in Washington, is no longer running only on seniority, endorsements or his long record in the Senate.

He is now turning more directly against Paxton, using law enforcement support as a weapon in a contest that has become one of the most closely watched Republican battles in the country.

The two men were pushed into a May 26 runoff after neither secured a majority in the March 3 primary.

Cornyn finished ahead in the first round, while Paxton stayed close enough to turn the runoff into a true test of power between the Republican establishment and the party’s more insurgent, Trump-aligned wing.

Recent polling has shown Paxton narrowly leading Cornyn among likely GOP runoff voters, including a University of Houston survey that placed Paxton at 48% and Cornyn at 45%. The Texas Tribune reported the poll as another sign that the race could be decided by a small margin unless something changes in the closing days.

That pressure appears to be shaping Cornyn’s campaign tone.

On X, the senator recently aimed straight at Paxton’s position as Texas attorney general, writing: “Ask yourself: why is it that Texas’ chief law-enforcement officer is not endorsed by any law-enforcement organization? Inquiring minds want to know.”

The jab was tied to Cornyn’s earlier post about a meeting with leaders from the Texas Municipal Police Association during National Police Week.

In that message, Cornyn wrote: “Great meeting with @TMPALegislative’s President Zach Hicks, Past President Ken Gardner, & Executive Director Kevin Lawrence to discuss TMPA’s legislative priorities for Texas law enforcement officers during #NationalPoliceWeek. The Lone Star State is home to nearly 150,000 police officers, & I am proud to support the work TMPA does on behalf of those who protect our communities.”

The message was clear. Cornyn wanted voters to see him as the candidate backed by law enforcement voices, while casting doubt on Paxton’s support among organized police groups.

It also fit into a broader line of attack from Cornyn and his allies, who have criticized Paxton’s leadership at the attorney general’s office and pointed to controversial case outcomes involving serious crimes as signs of failure.

But the response on X did not unfold the way Cornyn likely wanted.

Instead of quiet agreement, the post drew a wave of angry replies from voters who accused him of desperation, establishment politics and ignoring the conservative base. The comment section quickly filled with criticism from users who said they no longer trust long-serving Republicans in Washington and want a candidate who will fight harder for President Donald Trump’s agenda.

“Nobody believes you. We don’t trust you. Voting for the same people over and over, those days are gone. Time for you to go. We voted for Trump. His agenda. Not yours,” one user wrote.

Another replied: “I believe it’s up to the voters who will decide who THEY want for their Senator. Not a few who support you. Happy Police Week Officers.”

Others were much harsher.

“It’s funny how when you’re a** is on the line you actually do some work. I hope Ken wipes the floor with your RINO a**,” one comment said.

Another asked, “They are safely in your pocket. How much did you pay the associations to endorse you?”

One user summed up the distrust plainly: “You are a piece of work. Do you actually believe that we are in support of you? We are not stupid, we remember more than you think we do. Stop lying.”

The backlash reflects a bigger problem for Cornyn. His campaign is not only facing Paxton. It is also facing years of frustration among Republican voters who believe Washington Republicans have promised more than they delivered.

That anger has grown around the SAVE America Act, a major election-integrity proposal tied closely to conservative demands for proof of citizenship in voter registration, voter ID rules and cleaner voter rolls.

Cornyn has supported the legislation, and he has said he is open to changes in Senate rules if needed to move key priorities forward. But many critics on the right argue that his shift came too late and only after the runoff became politically dangerous.

For Paxton’s supporters, the fight over the bill has become a symbol of a much larger complaint. They see Cornyn as a powerful senator who had years to push the party’s promises through and failed to do so. They point to his past bipartisan work on gun legislation, earlier immigration debates and ties to Senate leadership as reasons to reject him now.

Paxton, meanwhile, has leaned into the image of a combative conservative fighter.

His supporters highlight his lawsuits against the Biden administration, his hard-line positions on border security and election issues, and his willingness to battle Democrats and Republicans alike.

The Associated Press reported earlier this spring that Paxton was embraced by CPAC activists as the MAGA favorite in the race, while Cornyn has continued to rely on institutional support and major spending advantages.

Cornyn’s allies have spent heavily to define Paxton as unfit, corrupt and ineffective. The Houston Chronicle also endorsed Cornyn in the runoff, arguing that Paxton would be a damaging choice for Republicans and praising Cornyn as a more dependable legislator. Cornyn has promoted that kind of support as proof that he can deliver results.

Yet online, his attacks are being met with a different kind of verdict. Many voters replying to his posts are treating each criticism of Paxton as another reason to rally behind the attorney general. Calls to “Vote Ken Paxton” have become common beneath Cornyn’s messages, turning the senator’s own feed into a battlefield.

With early voting underway and the May 26 runoff approaching, the race has become more than a fight between two Texas Republicans. It is a test of whether experience in Washington still carries enough weight with GOP voters, or whether the party’s grassroots are ready to throw aside another longtime senator in favor of a louder, sharper and more confrontational conservative voice.
