South Carolina – Famous academic institution Clemson University in South Carolina finds itself among 45 universities around the country under ongoing U.S. Department of Education investigation.
The investigation centers on the affiliations of the universities with The Ph.D. Project, an initiative aiming at raising Black, Hispanic, and Native American academics’ participation in business schools across the country.
About the investigation
The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights initiated the investigation amid concerns that these partnerships might constitute race-based exclusionary practices in graduate programs, potentially violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This part of the legislation forbids discrimination in programs and activities receiving federal financial aid discrimination based on race, color, and national origin.
The investigation of Clemson’s participation in The Ph.D. Project was announced following statements by the Department of Education that highlighted a more general examination under the Trump administration of diversity, equity, and inclusion activities within higher education.
The Department claims that the fundamental question is whether participation in such a group violates federal laws prohibiting discriminatory policies in educational environments.
Potential severe consequences
If Clemson, the only university from South Carolina mentioned in the investigation, is to be found in violation of Title VI, will face severe consequences including potential loss of federal funds. Such fines might impact the university’s access to Pell Grants and student loan programs, two essential parts of its financial aid offerings.
