Trump admin is cracking down on education institutions for ‘allegedly engaging in race-exclusionary practices’, one S.C. university on the list

South Carolina – Famous academic institution Clemson University in South Carolina finds itself among 45 universities around the country under ongoing U.S. Department of Education investigation.

The investigation centers on the affiliations of the universities with The Ph.D. Project, an initiative aiming at raising Black, Hispanic, and Native American academics’ participation in business schools across the country.

About the investigation

The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights initiated the investigation amid concerns that these partnerships might constitute race-based exclusionary practices in graduate programs, potentially violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This part of the legislation forbids discrimination in programs and activities receiving federal financial aid discrimination based on race, color, and national origin.

The investigation of Clemson’s participation in The Ph.D. Project was announced following statements by the Department of Education that highlighted a more general examination under the Trump administration of diversity, equity, and inclusion activities within higher education.

The Department claims that the fundamental question is whether participation in such a group violates federal laws prohibiting discriminatory policies in educational environments.

Potential severe consequences 

If Clemson, the only university from South Carolina mentioned in the investigation, is to be found in violation of Title VI, will face severe consequences including potential loss of federal funds. Such fines might impact the university’s access to Pell Grants and student loan programs, two essential parts of its financial aid offerings.

Following the investigation, Clemson University has committed itself to complete compliance with all federal, state, and local rules. The officials of the university have said they will completely assist the government agency to clarify their collaboration with The Ph.D. Project and handle any issues.

What is the Ph.D. Project

The Ph.D. Project was established with the goal of diversifying the academic landscape of business schools by supporting and mentoring underrepresented minorities in academia. Through a network of including more than 300 member institutions, it offers professionals from these minority groups a stage for transition from corporate positions to academic careers.

The organization hosts annual conferences and maintains a job board specifically for positions in academia, helping to foster a more inclusive academic environment.

One past point of emphasis has been Clemson’s participation with The Ph.D. Project as a good start toward academic diversity. In a 2018 article, the institution highlighted the great recruiting possibilities it gave for future faculty members and potential doctoral candidates, therefore praising its attendance in the annual conference run by The Ph.D. Project. At the time, several Clemson faculty members were alumni of The Ph.D. Project’s programs, underscoring the significant impact the organization had on their professional paths.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent rulings on affirmative action in college admissions have sparked a bigger national conversation on the role of race in educational opportunities, which underlie this continuous research.

Trump admin faces challenges

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, the February letter from the Department of Education has expanded the scope of investigation to include all facets of educational activities and implies that any kind of racial discrimination might potentially be seen as a federal law violation.

The academic community and the public anticipate more revelations as the investigation advances, which will not only influence Clemson but also create precedents for how educational institutions nationwide address diversity and inclusion going forward.
