Columbia, South Carolina – With its 37th Annual Commemoration Service, The City of Columbia is preparing to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This anticipated event will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at 2300 Green Street, Columbia, SC.
Held in line with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the celebration promises an emotional reflection on the ongoing influence of the civil rights activist.
Starting at the intersection of Harden and Green Streets at 3:06 p.m., the wreath-laying ceremony will recognize Dr. King’s efforts and accomplishments. This solemn moment will set the tone for the main service, which is scheduled to commence at 4:00 p.m.

The keynote speaker for this year is Columbia native and prestigious Columbia College President Dr. John H. Dozier. Over two decades, Dr. Dozier moved from business consulting to become a transforming leader in higher education. By combining his professional skills, devotion to community involvement, and equity and diversity, his speech will inspire attendees.
The remarkable career of Dr. Dozier has been defined by major achievements. Having held key positions in the City Colleges of Chicago, including Chief Information Officer and President of Kennedy-King College, he has also been the first Chief Diversity Officer at the University of South Carolina. His efforts toward inclusiveness and belonging have brought him several honors, including the Richard A. Rempel Faculty Award and the Distinctive Alumnus Award from South Carolina State University.

Apart from his career successes, Dr. Dozier has been an energetic community leader. He has helped groups including the Central Carolina Community Foundation, EdVentures Children’s Museum, and Historic Columbia. His dedication to education and cultural enrichment is shown by his current positions on boards including the MIT Press Management Board and the Boston Arts Academy Foundation.
The Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Columbia will provide an accessible bus shuttle for the event, therefore guaranteeing accessibility for every attendee. Shuttles will run from the parking deck at 2221 Devine Street, with access via Lee Street, offering a stress-free transportation option for participants.

Columbia offices closed on January 20
According to a press release by the City of Columbia, the City of Columbia’s buildings and offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
City of Columbia garbage and trash collection routes will be adjusting their schedules due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
Monday’s routes will be serviced on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 and Tuesday routes will be serviced on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
