Bill Young throws his hat in the ring for Republican nomination in SC’s 1st Congressional District

Charleston, South Carolina – South Carolina businessman Bill Young has put his name in the running for the Republican nomination for the 1st Congressional District in the state. Young announced the decision in a press release on April 10. Young joins fellow Republican Catherine Templeton in a mission to unseat incumbent Rep. Nancy Mace. The primaries will be held on June 11. With Young joining the race, the race for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District is getting a little more crowded.

On the Democratic side, the race for the nomination is equally competitive. Attorney and Coast Guard veteran Mac Deford, Charleston businessman Michael B. Moore, and Ben Fraiser are all running for the nomination and want to flip the seat in the general election.

Young is in charge of the South Carolina chapter of the Veteran Golfers Association and brings a lot of military and financial knowledge. He has also worked as a financial advisor for AXA Advisors, another proof of his experience in the financial sector. His campaign platform, which vows to deal with a wide range of important issues, is based on his varied background.

Young’s campaign has laid out six main goals that he wants to achieve if he wins the election for Congress.

  1. Close the border and end Catch and Release.
  2. Increase staffing for Veteran mental health at the VA.
  3. Amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to allow states to strike individuals who have not voted in two consecutive federal elections from the voter rolls.
  4. Promote tech and cybersecurity.
  5. Balance the budget.
  6. Increase STEM resources in the district.

Notable figures, like Medal of Honor winner Major General Jim Livingston and Major General Mike Regner, have backed Young, indicating a strong backing from the military community.

“He wants to win for America. Bill is the man for the hour. He’s youthful, he’s smart, and he’s got vitality,” said Major General Livingston.

“When you get a young man or woman that understands the youth of our nation, and understands every different walk and talk and shape of life, that’s the person you want on Capitol Hill,” said Major General Mike Regner.

Besides putting forward policy ideas, Young also wants to interact with voters directly by holding a number of town hall meetings. These events, organized in collaboration with the South Carolina Shrimper’s Association, are scheduled to take place at MOMO Riverfront Park in North Charleston and Shellring Ale Works in Port Royal. The town halls aim to foster community dialogue and provide a platform for Young to present his vision for the district.
