Hochul once invited migrants to New York, now she blames Trump for the illegal immigration

While Texas and California are on the forefront defending the border from illegal immigrants, other states are also experiencing heavy migrant crisis, and one state especially stands out – New York. Historically governed by Democrats, New York has earned a reputation for its openness to migrants in recent years. The state is currently grappling with numerous challenges attributable to the surge in migrant arrivals, first-hand experiencing the real economic, social, and safety impact.

Is Texas to blame?

Since Biden took over the White House office, Texas initiated Operation Lone Star, utilizing its own resources to bolster border security. A notably contentious aspect of this operation has been the transportation of migrants to sanctuary cities, with New York City being a primary recipient. Recent statement on X by Texas Governor Greg Abbott revealed that over 105,000 migrants have been sent to Democratic-led sanctuary cities under this initiative, with nearly 40,000 directed to NYC alone.

The impact

New York is now confronting the tangible impacts of unchecked immigration. The economic burden is evident as local governments scramble for additional funding to sustain migrant- related services. Additionally, the reluctance of migrants to depart the city of New York City or the state presents a significant challenge for policymakers. This situation has prompted a reassessment of policies, with efforts underway to amend legislation enabling the deportation of migrants who commit violent offenses.

Sanctuary state

New York’s longstanding reputation as a welcoming destination for migrants is under scrutiny amidst escalating challenges. Governor Katy Hochul has attributed the broader migrant crisis to former President Trump, overlooking the persistent appeals from Texas and other states for the federal government to enhance border security—a stance the federal government has resisted for years. In a recent appearance on The View, Governor Hochul criticized Trump and Republican lawmakers for their role in killing the border security bill in February, a move she believes has made the situation much worse.

The killed border bill

“The republicans in congress and in the senate said no [to the border bill] because Donald Trump called them up one night- the night before they should have voted on this- to send 2,000 more border patrol people to the border,” Hochul said. She made her comments despite recent statements that the asylum system was being abused and that migrants who commit crimes against police should be deported.

Behind the decision

On The View, Hochul acknowledged that both Democrats and Republicans shared responsibility for the situation, noting that neither party had successfully established a pathway to legal citizenship. The conflict over border policy reached a culmination with the collapse of the Senate agreement on the issue. Former President Trump criticized the agreement, labeling it a ‘Democrat trap’ and ‘one of the dumbest bills’ he had ever encountered. He stated his preference for no legislation over flawed legislation.

Biden, Democrats blame Trump for scoring election points

President Biden argued that Republicans were engaging in political maneuvers concerning the border issue, asserting his readiness to enhance border security. The withdrawal of Republican backing for the border agreement led Democrats to speculate that this move was aimed at gaining favor with Trump. In this context, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said: “When President Trump came along and said he didn’t want to solve the border problem, that he wanted it as a campaign issue, [House] Speaker Johnson obediently changed his tune.

New York City and the migrant crisis

At the beginning of the year, the governor took a step back from the turmoil in New York City, pointing to a report that suggested Mayor Eric Adams was responsible for the migrant crisis. As a sanctuary city, New York City has been challenged by the overwhelming arrival of migrants, facing basic and limited housing options. These have ranged from utilizing an old police academy, setting up tent accommodations, to placing cots in educational institutions. The situation has led some migrants to sleep on the streets. According to Mayor Adams, the city expended $1.45 billion on migrant-related costs in 2023.
