Democratic Socialism is an oxymoron

on Wednesday, 08 August 2018. Posted in Letters to the Editor

Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren’s claim that more government control of the economy will help grow America has made their buzzword, “democratic socialism”, the mother of all oxymorons.

According to the dictionary, socialism is defined as: “An economic system in which the production and distribution of goods are controlled substantially by the government rather than by private enterprise, and in which cooperation rather than competition guides economic activities.” Hear any democratic references there?

There is no socialist country in the world that has come close to the economic success of America’s 240 year-old free enterprise system.

To quote an old Mediterranean metaphor : “You may dress the shepherd in silk, but he will still smell of the goat.“ Dressing the term “socialism” with a politically pretty prefix still gives off the noxious odor of government control.

Senators Sanders and Warren maintain that their progressive approach will greatly benefit the middle class citizens. The 1% of the population whom they hate also happens to be the owners/investors of huge businesses in America and are responsible for millions of jobs for the middle class.

The younger generation who is protesting capitalism and supporting a socialist agenda must have had little education in high school/college of American history and are untethered from reality when they freely use the terms of nazism and fascism, yet must have no idea of those actual definitions nor of the human atrocities that occurred under socialist dictators.

Did these protestors ever take economics courses that explained how America was founded on the principal of free enterprise and became the greatest economy in the world ? The recent news that the nation’s economic growth rate of 4.1% surpasses the past four years of economic stagnation when the past administration told the American people that the economy could not move past 2.5%. The job growth due to tax reform and deregulations on business by Congress and the Trump administration in less than two years are compelling proof that a free enterprise system is far superior to any socialist government.
