SLOAN COLUMN: The best Halloween candy of all time?

What’s the best thing about Halloween?

Is it the costumes? Nope.

Scary movies? Nah.

The haunted houses? Unh-uh.

Kids of every age know the best thing about Halloween – always has been, always will be – is C-A-N-D-Y!

The National Retail Federation recently reported that despite the fear surrounding the ongoing pandemic, retailers expect to ring up more than $8 billion in candy sales this Halloween. That’s a lot of cavities.

We all have our favorites, of course. Remember dumping out the glorious contents of our bucket or bag or sack and frantically digging through all the sweetness in search of that one particular candy? Mine was Junior Mints

So what are the best Halloween candies of all time? The best of the best? The sweetest of the sweets? The treat of all treats? Think of it as a Hall of Fame for Halloween goodies.

The website compiled a ranked list of what they say are the 30 best Halloween candies of all time. In descending order, they are:

30. Airheads

29. Jolly Ranchers

28. Sour Patch Kids

27. Runts

26. Blow Pops

25. Whoppers

24. Milk Duds

23. Milky Way

22. Laffy Taffy

21. Nerds

20. Skittles

19. PayDay

18. Haribo Gummies

17. Junior Mints

16. Twizzlers

15. Baby Ruth

14. M&M’s

13. Flavored Tootsie Rolls

12. Heath

11. Starbursts

10. Hershey’s Bars

9. Reese’s Pieces

8. Nestle Crunch

7. Mr. Goodbar

6. 100 Grand

5. Butterfinger

4. KitKat

3. Snickers

2. Twix

And – drumroll, please – the Halloween candy of all Halloween candies, according to and surely about a gazillions others is … Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

“Not only is it the greatest candy out there, it’s also one of the greatest snacks, period, the perfect alchemy of peanut butter and chocolate,” states’s commentary on its champion chocolate. “It’s so, so versatile... especially at Halloween. Are you devouring the mini, with its jagged chocolate edges? The medium-cup, in all its one-biteable glory? Or the pumpkin, which serves as a vessel to get as much sugary peanut butter in your mouth as possible? It’s your lucky day: there’s no way to go wrong eating a Reese’s.”

So, did yours make the list? Can you think of some favorites that didn’t get the recognition you think they justly deserve? I dusted off the cobwebs in my mind, thought back to Halloweens past and came up with some oldies-but-goodies that deserve at least an honorable mention:

Now & Laters, Pop Rocks, Squirrel Nuts Chick-O-Sticks and Nuggets, Bit-O-Honeys, Fun Dips, Pixy Stix, Laffy Taffy, Boston Baked Beans, Charleston Chews, Slo Pokes, Tootsie Pops, Peanut Butter Logs, and those giant chewy Sweet Tarts.

Enjoy all those Halloween treats, folks, and try not to think about dentist’s bill.
