Sloan Column: Vets not the only ones who sacrifice
Today’s front page story on a new book about World War II veteran Sgt. Frank Wall serves as a reminder to us all that it was not just members and veterans of our armed forces who make sacrifices during their service to our country.
Thelma Wall lost her husband.
Fran Weaver never got to know her father.
There are thousands out there who are missing precious time with a son or daughter, wife or husband, mother or father while they are away serving our great country. The sacrifice is theirs as well.
Today, not only remember our veterans, present and past, but remember those who are at home holding the family together while a spouse is deployed or away on assignment.
There will be a special ceremony held at Florence Veterans Park Wednesday at 10:15 a.m. in front of the Gold Star monument, which recognizes the sacrifice made by those who remained at home.
They too deserve our thanks.
