Listing a few superlatives of our world

If someone was to ask me what is the most visited city in the world, I would not guess Bangkok. However, the Thai capital became the first Asian city to top the 2017 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Bangkok edged out London, the previous No.1, with 20.2 million international visitors who generated an estimated $14.4 billion U.S. dollars. London was number two, followed by Paris and Singapore.

What city has the longest life expectancy? According to the CIA, Monaco, the second smallest country in the world boasts the highest life expectancy, with citizens living an average of 89.73 years. Men in Monaco live an average 85.3 years, and women live longer to an average of 89 years.

The state with the highest percentage of people who walk to work is Alaska with 4.3% compared to the national average of 1.3%.

The next closest state, Vermont, had 3.1% of its working force commute by foot.

D.C. beats them all at 5.8%, but the District of Columbia is not technically a state. In general, cities have more people that walk to work than rural areas.


Would you believe North America has a higher percentage of wilderness than Africa? True, but this is mostly due to the Arctic Tundra and Boreal Forests, which in North America are mainly in Canada and Alaska. Twenty-eight percent of Africa is wilderness while 38 percent of North American is wilderness.

You may have felt South Carolina was one of the coldest places on earth last month, but that title actually belongs to East Antarctic Plateau.

On the high ridge of the East Antarctic Plateau, the temperature can drop to as low as minus 135.8 degrees Fahrenheit, which was recorded in August, 2010.

Where is the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city? Damascus is widely believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, with evidence of habitation dating back at least 11,000 years, reports Mother Nature Network. Its location and persistence have made the city a nexus for civilizations come and gone. Today its metropolitan area is home to about 2.5 million people, and in 2008 it was named the Arab Capital of Culture.

Jericho in the West Bank comes in at is number two, followed by Aleppo, Syria, which is believed to comprise the oldest human settlement. Athens, Greece is number four in oldest continuously inhabited city.
