Patriots finish 8th at Firestone Invitational
AKRON, OH – Senior Tobias Pettersen’s Top-20 finish helped guide Francis Marion University to an eighth-place showing at the University of Akron’s Firestone Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament, which concluded on Tuesday (Oct. 6).
The three-day 54-hole event was played on the 7,125-yard, par-72 Firestone Country Club north course.
FMU posted a 291 team score over the final 18 holes to finish with a 54-hole tally of 871, only four strokes out of fourth place.
The University of Maryland captured the team title by two strokes over the host Zips, 856 to 858. Old Dominion University rallied to place third with an 864 score, while Ohio University (867), Georgetown University (867), and Xavier University (867) rounded out the Top 5.
Pettersen cared a final-round 74 to finished tied for 19th position with a 216 total.
Sophomore Marc Casullo shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday and finished tied for 31st place at 218. Freshman Lars Sandvoll fired the team’s low round of Tuesday, a 4-under 68, to finish tied for 37th position at 219, while junior YongLiang Shao (75-71-77=223) tied for 52nd and sophomore Alessandro Caselli (74-73-77=224) tied for 55th. Caselli’s final round did include an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.
The Francis Marion squad excelled on the par-4 holes as the Patriots tied Maryland for the tournament lead with a 4.09 stroke average on those holes. FMU finished tied for third among the 16 teams with 166 pars. Casullo tied for second among all players with 39 total pars, while Sandvoll led the Patriots with 11 birdies.
First-day leader David Kocher of Maryland hung on to earn medalist honors with a one-stroke victory. He shot a 71 on Tuesday to finish at 9-under-par 207.
Francis Marion will return to action on Oct. 12-13 at the AutoTrader Collegiate Classic in Atlanta, Ga.
